Blackstone Library

Description

T. B. Blackstone Memorial Library is a building that is part of the Chicago Public Library System and is named after Timothy Blackstone. The building was designed by Chicago architect Solon S. Beman. It is now known as the Chicago Public Library – Blackstone Branch and commonly referred to as Blackstone Library, or Blackstone Branch and sometimes Blackstone for short. The Concord Granite building's two-year construction started in 1902, and it was dedicated on January 8, 1904. Blackstone Library marks the beginning of the Chicago Branch Library System as the first dedicated branch in the system. Blackstone is also the only branch of the 79-branch Chicago Public Library branch system that was constructed using private funding. The building is located in Chicago's Kenwood community area in Cook County, Illinois, United States and serves the Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Oakland community areas. The branch celebrated its 100th anniversary of service in 2004. Today, the library has bronze and mahogony furnishings and has themed paintings on the rotunda ceiling. The library is equipped with custom-designed furniture and makes public Wi-Fi access available to its patrons.HistoryThe library was dedicated to the memory of Timothy Beach Blackstone, President of the Chicago and Alton Railroad from 1864 to 1899, a period longer than any of his contemporaries. Blackstone, who had died on May 26, 1900, was also the founding president of the Union Stock Yards. He had owned the property on which the Blackstone Library now stands, and he donated this tract for the construction of the library after his death. The library was built on the tract through a codicil in his will, carried out by his wife, Isabella Norton Blackstone (1838–1928), after his death. Blackstone Library was his contribution to the city where he had made his fortune and stands as a monument to his generosity. Blackstone is 13794sqft and its original cost was $250,000.

The Blackstone Library Branch is a great neighborhood library branch, and its children's section is particularly noteworthy. Although it is a small neighborhood branch, they have made great use of the facilities to offer a welcoming space with books, games, and toys to foster children's learning and engagement. The programming is wonderful. We were able to attend a free outing to the Museum of Science & Industry hosted by the library for children and their families. The librarians are engaging and helpful, taking the time to listen to children's interests and then find materials that suit their needs. On a cold winter day, spending the afternoon with there with my four-year old reading, playing, and asking questions and learning how to find answers is one of my favorite ways to spend the day.
We utilize the children area very often. It's a good resource for young kids to spend time in the neighborhood, especially if you don't have a car and have limited options to explore other libraries. The play area doesn't offer as many toys as other libraries though, most likely due to the space being on the smaller side.
One of my top go-to libraries. The architecture is of a classic charm, the service is friendly and helpful, but I usually need little help as they've already set things up for fast self-service. When my holds are ready, I'm in and out within minutes! Thanks!
Tried to give this older library a chance but was blatantly disrespected by a tall Caucasian woman in her late thirties. Walked into the children’s section of the library and this woman comes out and turns all the lights off after she looked at me and my sister in the eyes. This place is already small and and out of date but to add a nasty attitude on top. I genuinely hope the she doesn’t not work with the African American children there. The only pleasant part of this place are the two other women I saw today.
Great building and pleasant staff. It is small but very easy to navigate. There are no quiet areas, though and it tends to be loud.
Blackstone is a vital community space. It's a place people of all ages can come together for wonderful programing and to have some time to themselves. Outside and inside, it's a beautiful place.
I love the architecture of the building. This library has some terrific books.
Beautiful, old building. Staff is friendly. Lots of activities for kids.
For such a great neighborhood, this library really needs an update or one that really has more amenities. Nothing but street parking and not a lot, not much space to sit at tables in this library. Things are close together such as the computer stations and the sitting tables. Books are often checked out and this library gets a lot of use. Beautiful old fashion building, with lots of hidden architectural features but still small for the amount of people that frequent this library. Hype Park library should be better for the amount of use it gets. Staff is great, kids section was bright, and full of books on display. The kids section is used a lot also. Lots of families with children, lots of high school use, university students, retired adults and more flock to this place. Parking, yes a challenge, so use online first to see where the book you want is located. It's my home branch so I support them,
Haven't visited here for a long time. We met our familiar librarian here today. She has played peekaboo with my little one since he was a baby. We played it again today. So sweet. Ms. Zena is also impressive! She knows many children's name and she is always helpful.
