Regenstein Library

Description

The Joseph Regenstein Library is the main library of the University of Chicago, named after industrialist and philanthropist Joseph Regenstein. It is one of the largest repositories of books in the world and is noted for its brutalist architecture.HistoryThe library stands on the former grounds of Stagg Field. In 1965, the Joseph Regenstein Foundation gave $10 million to the University for construction of the library. In 1968, the university broke ground and, in 1970, the library opened at the final cost of $20,750,000. The building was designed by the Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill led by senior architect Walter Netsch. It is built out of grooved limestone, which, from a distance, resembles concrete. University tour guides often remark on the resemblance between each of the elements of the building's facade and the fore edge of a book. The University of Chicago Graduate Library School was housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library until its closure. Today, the "Reg" is the flagship institution of The University of Chicago Library system, which is considered among the top five in the world for breadth and depth of material, and receives high marks from users (The Princeton Review placed it in the top nine for college students).

"The Joseph Regenstein Library is home to over 4.5 million print volumes focusing on subjects in the humanities and social sciences, as well as business, divinity, and area studies."

I love the reg always such a delightful experience! I enjoy going to complete my hours worth of homework! At times though I would say the wifi is quite laggy but that would be my only complaint! At times I feel like I myself am a scientist writing my papers while at the library! If you are can I would totally recommend stopping by the cafe during your trip it is a must! The food is very pricey but part of the ultimate experience! I would like to talk about as well the wonderful views at night if you check out the bookstacks you can see the Mansueto library with its lovely architecture! I love this location very much!!!! Please check out the images provided!!!
My second home, the Reg is the best spot on campus hands down. You can fully lock in by secluding yourself in the cubicle, or chill and get some work done with friends at a table. You can also take nice comfortable naps on the plump chairs! It is simply the best place to study since when you look around at your surroundings, you see other hardworking students grinding their behinds off and that is highkey motivating!
This library is a magnificent architecture. At least I can only say about the outside. You'll read that the dome is open to the public BUT it is not. Even after you find your way to the correct corridor, the Regenstien library where they give access passes have strict restrictions for the public. Even if you're a student in Chicago you must demonstrate/prove a "research" need to be in the library. I drove nearly an hour would be close to 2 hours on CTA to be told I can't go in, although I've read on plenty of sites that they have certain hours open to the public.
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth? Ooh, heaven is a place on earth They say in heaven love comes first We'll make Regenstein a place on earth Ooh, Reg is a place on earth
Fantastic library and fantastic sources and collection for research
