Following a delayed opening due to Stonewall Street not being completed, Bowie Elementary opened its doors in 1957. Mr. Tillery was the first principal and the original building consisted of the cafeteria, front office area, and a row of classrooms that are now connected to the 3rd grade hallway. Classrooms were entered from the outside and Mr. Tillery's office was where the current secretary's office is located. Many changes and lots of growth have occurred since then, but the spirit of excellence remains.
