As a summit student most of my teachers have been great. Had a few not so good mostly positive. Non summit wise from what I've heard some great some not so much. Highly encourage honors and AP courses with best teachers and classmates. Disorganized administration but great counselors. Great music/theatre program below average athletics. Overall I've enjoyed bowie but if you can't get into summit or AP/ honors classes you may or may not get good teachers. Not greatest overall school but definitely not the worst. Positives outweigh negatives for me. Lots of issues needed to fix but overall a good school.
Bowie high school is simply like any other high school, the teachers never give out grades. If you want something, you gotta work for it. The sports teams are nice, the club's are wonderful and its overall a good school in my eyes
I have had two of my four children attend Bowie High School, and will send the 4th next year. Just like any other high school in PG county, you get out what you put into it. You have to be a very involved parent and keep on top of your child's academic career. There are some teachers who are terrible, and some teachers who are exceptional. Most of the problems that occur at the high school come from both the overcrowding, and the fact that so many people who do not live in the catchment area for the high school will lie about their residence in order to get their kids into that high school, because it is better than many in PG county.
School is underfunded, horribly maintained, and violent. Materials are all used and broken, and any extra cash is given to the football team; which hasn't had a winning streak in years, by the way. They can't afford to provide paper to classes, put toilet paper or soap in the bathrooms, fix broken desks or windows, or support the arts department, but a brand new football field gets built? There was nothing wrong with the old one. Most teachers and security guards don't care what goes on or simply don't know how to manage a classroom. Fights are extreme and constant, principal is an idiot and many students end up falling through the cracks. Not to mention the overcrowding issues. Send your child anywhere else
I've had two children attend BHS and graduate. One struggled because he was not focused and the other excelled because she applied herself. Although my son struggled, the teachers and counselors did everything to support him and help him graduate. Like any public school, it's a joint venture between families, school & community. I am grateful to the teachers, administrators and counselors at BHS for all that they do. BHS is one of the best schools in Prince Georges County.
What a garbage dump. All the "teachers" here get high with all of the students. Half of the "teachers" just don't care, while the other half is on a power trip over the pathetic amount of power they wield over their students. It is a dangerous school, but not the worst. Still better than Baltimore, but it's not like that's hard to achieve, honestly. Take your kids to pretty much any other school than this, it is rife with corruption and ineptitude.
My Son is in his 10th grade year at this school. His Teacher called me yesterday while at work because he refused to sit at a desk that was Roach infested. She called me saying that my son wouldn't sit down and that she had threatened to write him up and his friends for refusing to sit at the desk. I explained to her that he had texted me to tell me the situation and that he didn't want to sit near the Roaches she acted as if she didn't have a clue about the roaches and told me that she didn't know anything about the roaches and kept blaming my son for being rude. Once my son arrived home he showed me photos of the classroom. The draws are infested with roach feces, roach opened eggs and roaches to top it off. Roaches are crawling on the floor the desk draws they are everywhere!. The same day my son was doing classwork and a roach ran across his paper, now what kind of mess is that?. This type of atmosphere is unacceptable!!!!!. I had no idea the taxpayers were paying for the Roaches High School Tuition. I am not interested in receiving Roaches in my home due to the lack of concern for the cleanliness in this school. I explained to the teacher that I wasn't interested in unwanted guest such as roaches that do not pay bills and that she needed to put him in another seat. However the WHOLE CLASSROOM is filled with Roaches and Trash in the draws. One of the students opened up the draw and the roaches were mating!!! This is not a Insect Sex Education Class. I'm highly upset at the treatment of these students. The Teachers have seen these roaches all school year and refuse to do anything about it. These students are in need of a change and should not be disciplined for not wanting to sit next to roaches on a daily bases.
I only went here in the 9th grade but I still have a lot of fun. I performed in POPS, met awesome people, and all around had a fantastic first year, haha. If the school had more opportunities other than sports and chorus, I would give it five stars! :DDD
