Bowling Green (IRT Lexington Avenue Line)

Description

Bowling Green is a station on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line of the New York City Subway, located at Broadway and Battery Place (at the Bowling Green), in the Financial District of Manhattan. It is served by the ' train at all times and the ' train at all times except weekday late nights.Station layoutThe station has two tracks and two platforms in service: a center island platform that serves Brooklyn-bound trains, and a side platform that serves uptown trains. An abandoned and walled off island platform and track on the west side of the station were formerly used by the Bowling Green–South Ferry Shuttle to the inner platform at South Ferry. South of the station, the tracks diverge with one set entering the Joralemon Street Tunnel to Brooklyn. The line continues to the closed South Ferry inner loop station, which is used by the 5 train when it short turns at Bowling Green during evenings and weekends.HistoryWhen the station opened on July 10, 1905, there was as yet no IRT service to Brooklyn, and all Lexington Avenue trains terminated at South Ferry, using the outer-loop platform. After the Joralemon Street Tunnel opened in 1908, some Lexington Avenue trains continued to terminate at South Ferry, even during rush hours, while others went to Brooklyn. This service pattern was soon found to be inadequate for the high volume of Brooklyn riders.

One of the oldest stations in the system and MTA headquarters at 2 Broadway is 25 feet away. There is a backdoor connection to to the 2 train, 1 line and other surprises. This station is accessible as well.
Great area with flowers and big fountain. OK to walk on; there is always trash however when I go in
I used the subway station to get to the Staten Island Ferry.
Conveniently located close to the ferry. The red tiles on the wall look cool. It's very warm as I'm here today, not sure if it's always like this.
This is the best train station for the 4 and 5 train because it’s closer to the Staten Island Ferry. It also has express train and I been using this station almost 10 years. I love those red walls and they’re so gorgeous. It has free transfer from uptown and downtown without getting out of the subway and pay more fare.
Good station with easy access. It's kept relatively clean by a nice staff. The only problem is that the escalators are often busted, but there's only so much you can ask for from a station this busy. It's usually easier to get off and on towards the rear of the train, though if you're going downtown being at the very front of the train puts you right by an exit that goes into Battery Park.
Decent subway station with elevators and escalators but none that lead outside of the station, only to other areas inside the station.
A city park, near the ferry. No big deal.
Access to Wall Street, WTC memorial, National Museum of the American Indian, Ferry to Staten Island and Governor's Island
