Just and up front FYI there is a 7 dollar fee to hike the canyon but it's not monitored. Me and my husband took our 13 month old and we had a wonderful time, its not that bad of a hike. You will be jumping rocks sometimes though so you'll probably need good balance. I would definitely go again. So beautiful.
A very nice canyon hike that led to a gorgeous waterfall. Trail was slippery, muddy and steep at the beginning, but there's a rope along this steep portion that you can hold on to so it was easier to go down to the river. We only went to the waterfall and came back but you can continue and come back around. People were saying it's less steep that way.
This is a beautiful location. The hike is hot, but the freezing cold swimming hole at the end makes it all worth it! I recommend bringing something for shade. Playground: None Restrooms: Port-a-potty Dog-friendliness: The first part of the hike is a little steep for smaller breeds. Picnic area: Not really.
August of 2020 I came back home to visit family. With this trip I wanted to visit certain places I hadn't been since I was a kid, but I also wanted to go for hikes at parks I'd never been to either. One day when visiting with my SIL and neice and nephew I told my SIL that I wanted to go for a hike and explore. She suggested Box Canyon State Park as it is a place she goes and it's a nice short distanced hike. Upon arrival I was just in awe. Water was super low but the thing I love about the southern part of Idaho, when visiting certain places it's just so quiet and peaceful. I defintely would like to go back when it's more full, curious to see the comparisons. I can't wait to go back and do more exploring in Idaho. I'm excited to see what all I've been missing. I implore you to do the same and take lots of pictures.
This is a must if you are passing by. Deferential be ready to hike down and around the canyon to the left. The totally hike is about 30 to 45 mins depending on the speed you are hiking it. We did it with a baby and 4 other kids. Good shoe is definitely recommended. Pack lightly, towel, water and a little snack, unless you spending a whole day there which you can.
Unbelievably beautiful. It’s a steeper incline down for littles, but very do-able if you have an adult to help per little. For an adult, this would be a easy hike with gorgeous views.
This was a gorgeous hike. The descent is tricky at times but rails have been set up to help and the views are worth it. While I do recommend taking kids, make sure they're wearing decent gear and have good balance and hiking experience. Several spots are great for water access but there's an especially nice shallow beach at the end of the canyon trail before it turns into an access road. Stop and swim or enjoy watching the fish from the shade! We recommend going back up the canyon the same way you go down to get to the water; it's slower and narrower but there's shade, water views, and green unlike the dirt, scrub, and gravel of the access road. Park fee is $7 unless you have an Idaho Parks Pass.
Great hike we took 4 kids with us. They did fine. We parked in the second parking lot so we didn't have to walk the black pavement. The views were so beautiful!
Beautiful! Especially now with the new road that takes you to the canyon rim and expanded parking lot. If you make it to the end, the water is perfect, a constant 58 degrees!
Wonderful hike. Beautiful canyon and a 20ft waterfall. In the winter sections of the trail can be really really muddy so wear good boots. The hike down into the canyon was a little sketchy as there was mud and ice when we went earlier in the day, but if you're an avid hiker like us it's not a problem at all. The trail does loop around if you don't want to hike back out through the canyon. The only disappointment was how much trash I saw down there. Remember to pack in, pack out. My husband and I had a trash bag and tried to take more out than we brought. I reccomended others do the same and we clean the hike up to help keep it beautiful!
