Box Elder is a city in Meade and Pennington counties in the State of South Dakota. The population was 7,800 at the 2010 census. The racial makeup of the city was 79.5% White, 5.1% African American, 4.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, 2.4% from other races, and 6.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.9% of the population.There were 2,443 households of which 55.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 19.4% were non-families. 15.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.26.
