Artist Statement
My work evokes the passage of time. Faded frescoes, ancient walls, historical structures, aged stones, all of these random elements become the engine that drives my creative process. I am simply fascinated by historical vestiges of ancient civilizations and their artifacts. I am particularly influenced by my yearly stays in Italy where I get to bask in the cultural cradle of classical art. I carry these experiences back to the studio where they continue to influence me as they bring forth new ideas. Most of my paintings have many layers that are created intuitively using an array of materials such as plaster, oil paint, cold wax and pure pigments as well as other various mixed media. My process consists of adding, scraping, excavating, erasing and mark making in order to create real intricate textured surfaces and patinas that represent the aging process of an element. I want the work to become a time capsule, a conduit taking the viewer into another dimension in space and time.
