This is a beautiful setting in a beautiful neighborhood. The exhibits are well done, but they aren't so extensive or so numerous that you feel overwhelmed — you can feel like you get something out of it even in a short visit. And don’t miss the library on the second level. You can view it from just inside the doors, or if you want to see it more up close and peruse some of its holdings, you can sign in at the library’s front desk.
It was calm and quiet and informative. A small museum with interesting exhibits. A cool way to plug into a Brooklinite mindset and gather history on the cultures that make up Long Island.
We rented the Center for Brooklyn History for our wedding. We used the space for both our ceremony and reception. We could not have had a more magical evening. The library space is absolutely gorgeous, and provided a perfect, reverential backdrop for our nuptials. The downstairs space is nicely laid out, with access to the outdoor patio allowing us to enjoy the warm Brooklyn summer evening. The staff was a pleasure to work with - courteous, professional, and efficient. The communication was clear, and they were very flexible. They worked hard to make our wedding perfect, and they responded to all our requests with an attitude of "yes and." Plus, our space rental fee was a direct donation to the BPL system, which was huge plus! Would highly recommend them for any event you have.
Excellent exhibits, library, specialty shop and staff: a true tribute to historic and contemporary Brooklyn.
I went here for the Brooklyn Book Festival and it is a beautiful location. The staff was very friendly and despite the volume of people at the location, the staff had a great handle on control and organization. There are multi levels i never got to see the second floor, but the bathroom in the basement was fairly clean and the library auditorium is massive. Great place to host discussions and other events if available to. Can’t wait to see what you guys have next.
Great place with lot to learn about history of Brooklyn but there is no guide to walk around and give you details...so it's kind of you are on your own ...
The place is a hidden gem. The museum isn’t very big, might take 2-3 hours to see everything at the museum and has a great deal of history about Brooklyn. A very beautiful and still functional library. There are collections about history of different ethnic groups and their history in brooklyn. A great place to visit if you are interested to know to history of brooklyn. Also it’s free for students, but they do accept donations.
Very cool building built specifically for the purpose of being a Historical Society. Inside is one of the most beautiful libraries I've ever seen - make sure you visit when the library is open!
If your are interested to know about Brooklyns history ...this is the place to go and look, read and study. It was founded in 1863, it is a museum, a historical library, and educational center whose main purpose is preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn's 400-year history. The society's home a Romanesque Revival building, located at Pierrepont and Clinton Streets in Brooklyn Heights, is a National Historic Landmark and part of Brooklyn Heights Historic District. "In the 1970s and 1980s, the institution reestablished itself as a museum and education center. The institution, which changed its name to Brooklyn Historical Society in 1985, broke new ground by embracing social history practices and exploring the diversity of Brooklyn’s history and people. It established a pioneering oral history program, reaching out to as-yet unchronicled Brooklyn communities and capturing their experiences. The Society also began featuring exhibits such as Black Churches in Brooklyn and AIDS/Brooklyn, the first exhibit to cover this topic at a history museum in the United States."
