The Buena Vista Police Department was created to provide protective and informational service to the community. Because a society free of crime and disorder is an unachieved ideal, measures must be taken to approach that goal. To this end, the Department must enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner by recognizing both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority as well as the constitutional rights of all persons. It is not the role of the Department to legislate, render legal judgments, or punish.
Members of the Buena Vista Police Department must always be cognizant of the fact that the manner in which they deal with citizens, guests and others is many times more important than any action that is subsequently taken. The community has long regarded the Buena Vista Police Department with respect due to its perception of the Department’s high level of professionalism. It is up to each individual member of the Department to maintain this tradition by being fair, firm and impartial, as well as friendly and approachable.
In the Buena Vista area, Department employees must be concerned that guests enjoy themselves during their stay. The quality of the time guests spend in Buena Vista is largely dependent on the local residents with who they have contact. Police Department employees are in the unique position of turning negative situations into positive ones. It is critical that citizens, guests and others are treated with dignity and respect. Self-restraint on the part of police employees is another quality through which respect is garnered.
It is important to police employees, however, that they know the community will stand with them in their quest for the ideal, crime free society. Along with its virtue of respect for the people, the Department values its mission to ceaselessly pursue criminals, suppress and prevent crime, apprehend offenders, maintain order, facilitate the safe movement of traffic and otherwise serve the public.
