Description

Alex and Leyla moved from Baku, Azerbaijan to pursue life in sunny San Diego. Initially, Leyla only baked as a hobby. The idea for Café21 came after Alex asked Leyla to bake a plate of baklava for one of their friends who owned a restaurant. The baklava was so impressive, they were asked to continue baking more to sell at the restaurant. Soon, their home kitchen evolved into a full-blown, bustling bakery, until there was no longer room to meet the demand. In 2007, Alex and Leyla opened a restaurant at 2121 Adams Avenue, appropriately named Café 2121. Later in 2007 they re-located a few blocks up Adams, and shortened their name to Café21. With a focus on fresh, local ingredients and world flavors, Café21 continued to expand and in 2008, they opened an additional location in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Best brunch I’ve had in forever. Jason was wonderful! The food was so freaking good. Especially the shrimp cake egg Benny thing. So freaking good. Iced vanilla latte also slapped. Would 10000000% come back here just for the atmosphere and for Jason.
Cafe 21 is a gem! Clifton served us in the bar area. The restaurant was beautiful and service was top notch. My daughter and I enjoyed the French toast and Tomato Egg Dish. I had the espresso martini too, which was heavenly! The floral notes were my favorite part!Food: 5/5
Cafe 21 is one of my favorite brunch places. Their food is so amazingly delicious and you can't go wrong with any item. I got there short rib crepe cake and it was one of the best things I've ever had! Seriously so good! Plus their mojito flight is fantastic! All awesome flavors. And last but certainly not least, the staff is wonderful! I've been here multiple times and everyone is always so kind, quick and helpful!
OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Came here with our Bridal party for brunch, was a short wait to get seated. Our server Tyler was the absolute best, most kind person, and made our experience that much better and more fun! And don't even get me started on the food! If your looking for something, fresh, farm to table, organic, only the best ingredients, and absolutely delicious!! This is the place!! The best food and drinks I've had in a long while! Truly quality food that you can taste! The galaxy tea was such a fun experience too! The dutch pancakes were absolutely to die for!! They also had a gluten free lava cake dessert that was great for one of the girls in our party. The atmosphere was really beautiful and the bathrooms were clean. And our server Tyler even brought a free dessert for our bride! This place was so good that we are still talking about it and we want to go back! There is so much more on the menu to try!
Happened to be our breakfast spot for the last day of our trip to San Diego. We took a Lyft to the cafe. The parking lot didn't look that full though it belonged to the Liquor store next door and in case you would want to park to grab a bite, it'd have to be on the street. Got in and were seated close to the entrance and we requested for an inside seating and while we were moving to the table inside we grabbed seats at the bar definitely recommend that!!!. Settled down and placed orders where we got intrigued with the tea and coffee selection that they had to offer. We ordered Peas of Mind and Trained Dragon respectively and they turned out to be so smooth and perfect even though they were Espresso at the heart of it. Followed that up with an order of the Blueberry Dutch Pancake ,along with Feta Omelette and a Strawberry Crepe. Each of these tasted so fresh and very organic at heart. We were told by Patrick who was tending the bar about how all the ingredients are sourced from the best possible and the end result definitely showed that. The Pancake had just the right amount of everything in it and tasted perfect. We did top it with some maple syrup though it would have been just fine without that as well. The omelette came with the sourdough bread and tasted that damn good. Being mesmerized with what we had already finished, we ended up ordering a Toast and Butter side and another Pancake Banana Dutch, this time though and these too were gone in no time. All this while we stuck some great conversations with Patrick that ranged from bar tending to mma to life skills and a plethora of more such. One of the best couple of hours spent while eating. The staff in general was amazing , very friendly and did make sure that we had a great time at the Cafe. Once again a big shoutout to Patrick and the entire team that make it happen day in and day out at the Cafe 21. Even if it happens to be out of the way for you, please do stop by!!!
Visited this place to have brunch with friends. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere with nice decor that added to the dining experience. The seating arrangements were comfortable, and the staff were attentive and friendly. Although the menu had a variety of options to choose from, the portion sizes were smaller than what I would have expected for the price. The mimosa flight was a delight.
Cafe 21 is a must-visit brunch spot with amazing cocktails and delicious food. The chic decor sets the perfect mood for a relaxing brunch, and the creative and pretty cocktails are a highlight. The food is made to perfection and the service is top-notch. Overall, it's a fantastic spot for a satisfying and enjoyable brunch experience.Food: 5/5
I have to say everything was perfect. The food was delicious and in perfect amounts. Not to mention the dessert, it was a perfect balance of sweetness. This place is a must to visit! We got the turkey Benedict, short rib crepe , and the Dutch pancake. All perfect. Oh ! And the coffees, some of the best in San Diego. Vegetarian options: Several vegetarian options to pick from.
I've recently been fortunate enough to visit a small café nestled in the charming heart of University Heights in San Diego, where I was welcomed with an exceptional culinary delight. The venue was intimate and bursting with a unique charm that instantly appealed to my senses. The whimsical atmosphere, complemented by the exquisite food and service, left me utterly enchanted. Let's start with their pancakes - they were petite, but that belied the explosion of flavor and texture packed within. They were some of the fluffiest pancakes I have ever had the pleasure of tasting, leaving an impression of lightness rather than heaviness, a feat few establishments can master. To say that they might be the best pancakes I've eaten in my life would not be an overstatement. Next was their OatCap, an adventurous blend that left me both intrigued and satisfied. Adorned with mint, a slice of grapefruit, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and garnished with petals, it was a refreshing departure from the conventional. The innovative combination of flavors was daring yet pleasingly harmonious, creating a vibrant dance of tastes that tantalized my palate. The service was equally remarkable. Our waiter, originally from Germany, extended a warm and genuine hospitality that was truly unparalleled. We bonded over shared stories, making our dining experience personal and comfortable. The care he put into ensuring our satisfaction was commendable. But it was not just the culinary excellence and attentive service that made my experience special. The café owner, in an unexpected and delightful twist, spontaneously broke into song, adding an unanticipated layer of enjoyment to our visit. It was a performance that was as heartfelt as it was entertaining, adding to the overall uniqueness of our experience. In conclusion, this café in University Heights is an unexpected gem. A place that offers more than just great food, it provides a meaningful experience that lingers long after the last bite of pancake and the final sip of OatCap. I wholeheartedly recommend this charming café to anyone seeking a truly unique and delightful culinary experience in San Diego.
What a cozy place, the food is that leaves you speechless, the combinations are delicious, the ingredients apart from the fact that everything is 100% homemade for them you will already imagine the textures of the super real flavors, the drinks wow!!! There are drinks that can be drunk cold or hot what we loved are the drinks, there were some fruit mimosas like shots the staff don't know what beauty of super friendly and warm people I definitely have to go again!!
