Our History
Ashtabula; “river of many fish”
In 1972, David and Edith Carter purchased Camp Ashtabula. Originally known as a fishing camp, its founding owners were from Ashtabula, Ohio.
Camp Ashtabula is situated on 25 acres of beautiful, level grounds which are shaded by huge oak, maple and pine trees. It is surrounded by approximately 750 feet of shoreline on Pigeon Lake. Pigeon Lake is unique as it can be accessed by 5 other lakes without having to lock.
Camp Ashtabula has seen many changes over the years. In the beginning, it consisted solely of 7 cottages. A corn field became a seasonal trailer park, three permanent homes were built and two cottages were added to the property. Eventually, the cottages became equipped with their own showers, instead of the guests using a central shower house. Each cottage has seen many modern renovations over the years.
Today, our three – season family resort is now in its second generation of the Carter family. It is operated by son Rob, his wife Donna and their two children Jeff and Jennifer.
The Carter family has operated Camp Ashtabula for over 42 years. The home – like atmosphere and personal service keep our clientele coming back year, after year.
