The Capitol Theatre was a movie palace located at 1645 Broadway, just north of Times Square in New York City, across from the Winter Garden Theatre. Designed by the noted theater architect Thomas W. Lamb, the Capitol seated 4,000 and opened October 24, 1919. After 1924 the flagship theatre of the Loews Theatres chain, the Capitol was known as the premiere site of many Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films. The Capitol was also noted for presenting live musical revues and many jazz and swing bands on its stage.HistoryThe Capitol was one of the first of the large lavish movie theaters that dominated the film exhibition business for the next 40 years. The theater was acquired in 1924 by the entertainment magnate Marcus Loew and became the flagship of his deluxe Loew's Theatres chain. The Capitol was the frequent site of the world premieres of films made by the Loew's-owned Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio. This was the theatre at which the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz had its first New York run. After having been converted for the presentation of Cinerama wide screen films in 1964, the theater's last engagement was the New York premiere of MGM's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was a great venue to watch a concert. The venue was late in letting us all in for the concert. There were a lot of security and they were very thorough in searching everyone but, it seems that we were waiting on the security to get ready for the event and that's what the delay was all about.
We recently went to a concert at the capitol theatre and had a really good night! Getting in was really quick and easy. The venue itself was small but really pretty. It’s capacity is about 1800 people I think it said so it was definitely a different concert experience. I’ve been to some smaller venues and was pleasantly surprised that my feet didn’t stick to the floor the whole night. The drink pricing was also more reasonable than other venues I’ve been to. They had some food choices such as popcorn and waffles!? I had already eaten so I didn’t get any food. I got a modelo to drink and it was really bad. Usually I like it a lot and this was really sour/bitter tasting. Also something I think is important is that I guess it has some sort of AC in it but it wasn’t very cold inside. It was mid 90s outside so I wasn’t sure if I should wear shorts/pants if the ac was cranked or not. I went with shorts and was so glad I did because I was quite warm inside. Also, not sure if this was artist preference or theater but they were pretty strict about not recording the show on your phones.
I love the Capitol theater. Despite it's compact and tall design, it can host 1,800 people, enough to host high level bands. Even seats in the balcony are close to the stage, making it possible to see the performers with ease. It's cozy, good acoustics, excellent dynamic illumination, easy to get in and out. A large MTA commuter parking makes it easy to park nearby for free, just 5 minutes walk. Last time I was here in October 2022 Jeff Beck did one of his last beautiful concerts here. This time it was ZZTop, another memorable concert of a band close to my heart. Highly recommended!
The Capitol Theater is an awesome venue with great sound and great seating options. You can sit up in the balcony and get a cool perspective of the band and light show. Or you can be down in GA on the floor, which is fun to dance and mingle. The staff are all very nice and I like how they sell snacks at the bar and at a downstairs booth. I would recommend seeing any show here.
This is one of my favorite venues in the three states where I frequent concerts. I saw the always amazing Styx there, go see them if you have a chance. The staff is extremely friendly and seem to be proud of this theater that was built in 1926. It is amazingly ornate, beautiful, and well preserved with a full marble staircase going up to the second floor. There is a large bar in the building and smaller bars located upstairs and downstairs. They offer very easy access to all seats and the theater is small enough to make for an intimate experience. Although expensive at $25, there is parking directly across the street and there is a restaurant right beside the entrance the venue. I love it!
Saw primus here last year and it was pretty awesome. Bathrooms are upstairs. Recently, I saw a podcast taping there and had seats upstairs. Very tight upstairs. You have to get up to let people out of the row. Beer selection is great. Staff was very nice. Smoking section is big, but can pack up at concerts.
Visited the Capitol Theatre for the first time on 9/12/23 to see Ray LaMontagne. There is a parking lot right across the street for $25. We didn't see any other close parking lots. The security staff and all theatre staff were very nice and helpful. The theatre itself is beautiful. Feels like a cross between a Broadway theatre and the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. There are multiple bars with drinks and snacks that are located on both levels. The only drawback were the uncomfortable seats. We will definitely return!
The Capital Theater is still a wonderful place to go party and see a show. The bathrooms are clean the sound system is just phenomenal. Please continue to read my reviews hit that like button and subscribe. Have a great day bye.
Phenomenal historic venue. Spacious seats, reasonably priced drinks. Will be back!
An iconic venu that has hosted most if not all rock legends. Parking is a bit tricky, but sound is amazing.
