The Capobiancos are the best! I started with them when i was a child when they were starting out in the firehouse in east brunswick decades ago. They are still in business after all these decades which says a lot about how good this organization is. Highly recommended start your kids off young so they can learn discipline and self-defense.
This is amazing place for your kids to learn discipline, focus, respect and get not just martial art's skills but also get fit and learn fair play. My child is a member for almost 2 years and he is looking forward to every class. Master Karla Capobianco is a great instructor, she is patient, funny and engaging but also strict, hard working and always pushes kids to get the best out of them. Highly recommend!
Truly amazing place where kids get to be kids AND learn discipline, respect, defense and so much more! The instructors are truly the best and keep the kids engaged! To address that “one star” review, as a parent of a student that has been attending that school for nearly two years and counting, ALL of similar schools have a contract, as do other “specialty gyms”. There are reasons when one may cancel the contract and no future charges - read the fine print and ask questions. The admin at the school is EXTREMELY helpful - provides a ton of useful, helpful information - regardless if you’re a “new” parent or if you’ve been there for a while.
We enrolled both our children over 5 years ago in Capobianco's ATA school. We chose Taekwondo to help our son learn to focus in school and for the discipline the sport provides. We wanted our daughter to be strong and one day learn how to defend herself. We found family in this school with the instructors, students, and parents. Master C is a big part of the change we see in our children. It still amazes me to see the strength in their technique knowing what it was when they first enrolled. For the negative reviews you read here please focus on this one thing. The path to a black belt is a journey. It is easy to say you quit because the instructor is tough, not mean, but tough. Remember that you enrolled your child not be coddled but to be encouraged to reach their best potential. Work with the instructors, not against, and stay and watch your children in class. Encourage when they want to quit because it is a hard journey and you will see really great things. So happy to have found this school and Master and Mr. C. Give it a shot!
We have been at ATA for many years and appreciate the structure and respect for authentic martial arts in a sea of so many schools in the area that fail to provide that. We appreciate most of all right now the many ways the school has adapted to this time during pandemic. A wide variety of zoom classes in addition to outdoor camps have been offered while consistently maintaining safety protocols first at all times.
Love Love Love them! It's real martial arts. They are teaching kids many different things beside martial arts including life skills. They learn to believe that they can accomplish anything if they work hard and listen to instructions. They learn to respect their parents, teachers, classmates, competitors, and themselves. They learn confidence and gain self esteem by working hard to earn stars, stripes, and belts. I wish they did this kind of martial arts in the public schools.
It is a shame that the owners and staff do not treat all students at this place equally. When it comes time to test for promotion some students "get a pass" and details of testing are overlooked if they do not complete a skill, while others are put through the ringer and if they miss one detail of their testing, they are punished by having to go through another cycle of classes including another cycle of payments! without being promoted. It seems that the philosophy of this place is to go through the motions of instruction while getting the students to pay for all equipment at inflated prices to better the business' bottom line. In addition, they actually try to get the parents of the kids to pay for the uniform for the owner when she was testing for an advanced rank! They will nickel and dime you here, unlike other dojos. Knowing what I know now, I would look elsewhere for instruction. I also noticed that one of the reviewers here has the same last name as the owners. Interesting.
I'm 47 years old and joined the club last November as part of a personal challenge. As an adult, I took a pretty scientific approach to my school selection by interviewing and observing several outfits. I found East Brunswick ATA to have the best recipe of body/mind development through a rigorous and well-documented program. The instructors "ARE martial arts .. to the CORE"! Senior Master Karla C is a 7th degree Master Blackbelt whose focus is on "technique". Mr. Rich C, is a 6th degree Blackbelt who teaches not only the ATA classes but the Krav Maga self-defense program. Mr. C's focus is on speed and delivery. Atop the martial arts training, I see the effect that the training has on the kids in class. These youngsters "transform" in front of my eyes every week into ultra-confident and self-disciplined individuals whose chins keep rising higher and higher. The kids also find the school to be an extension of their family. The Capobianco's really embrace their members and share in each one's individual "story". If all 206 bones and associated muscles in my body continue to cooperate, my goal is to achieve Blackbelt by age 50 and have a blast doing it!
I have been to this ATA branch at east brusnwick and recommend it completely. Rich, the instructor is knowledgeable and friendly. I have been to this location for a year now and have ten friends who came in to try for a free lesson I also belong to a women's activity group. The mats are always clean and plenty of parking.
This is a Horrible, Horrible place. All the staff are very unprofessional, the front desk lady only talk about her kids and not explaining the contract. They have the parent sign a six month contract and no cancellation under any circumstances. no matter what happen in your life you still have to pay to the end of the contract. In my option, that is just Money Hungry. Any company offer early cancellation penalty, but not them...
