MILLWORKS GALLERY ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL EXHIBITION: CAPTURING CULTURE
Capturing Culture, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by internationally acclaimed artist Jeffrey Lipsky, will open April 1, 2012 at millWORKS Gallery in Lowell, Massachusetts, and run for two months, closing May 31. For the past 3
years, Lipsky has been creating artworks that document and interpret events at Jaded, Lowell's longest running gothic/fetish venue. His works capture the essence of these gatherings, and interlace current events and aspects of local
culture into each of the compositions. The artworks are spontaneous, edgy, narrative, deviant, and vibrant.
Many artists have created works that go beyond mere documentation of
events and add the artist’s sense of time, place and interpretation. From
Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and Thomas Hart Benton to Reginald
Marsh and Harvey Pekar, American artists have brought their unique
visions to a wide audience. Lipsky continues this tradition with a
contemporary attitude.
The live event art in his current exhibition was created between 2009 and
2012 at the monthly Jaded events amongst dancers, musicians, and the
public. With his easel set up by 10 pm, he completes each work by 1:30
am. Unlike many of his predecessors, he does not sketch or photograph
the event and complete the work later in his studio. The speed at which he
works captures the spontaneity of the moment. One can see geometric
rhythms, human forms, graffiti, and an embrace of the subtle and
expressive qualities in the materials Lipsky uses. Once the art is
completed, he uses online Social Media to share his creations with an
international audience.
Lipsky has been featured in The New York Times Magazine and The Boston Globe. His artworks have been exhibited in many galleries domestically and internationally with one‐artist exhibitions in France and Portugal.
