Committed to teaching, producing, and presenting the documentary arts: photography, film, audio, writing, and other creative media. All are welcome.
CDS is a gathering place for students of all ages, visitors, and artists who understand how documentary stories can wake us up, change our perspectives, and inspire us to action. Come join us.
The Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) is a nonprofit affiliated with Duke University, founded in 1989 as the first institution in the U.S. dedicated solely to the rich legacy and continuing practice of the documentary tradition. With an emphasis on the role of the individual in contributing to society, we teach a wide range of classes in the documentary arts—photography, film/video, audio, writing, and other creative media—to both undergraduate and continuing education students; exhibit documentary work in our galleries; and produce and support documentary work through our programs and projects, including an awards program, a publishing arm, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, audio fieldwork projects, a documentary writing program, and more.
All photographs, texts, videos, and other artwork appearing on the Center for Documentary Studies Facebook page are copyright by the artists.
Our broad educational mission is to teach the documentary arts—photography, film/video, audio, writing, and other creative media; to produce and promote documentary work; and to present the documentary arts to audiences at home and abroad. CDS has focused since its early days on cultivating new talent in the documentary field, with an emphasis on the role of the individual in contributing to society.
