Central State Hospital (Kentucky)

Description

Central State Hospital is a 192-bed adult psychiatric hospital located in eastern Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky. In 1869, 200 acres were purchased by the Kentucky State Legislature from the descendents of renown frontiersman Issac Hite to establish a "State House of Reform for Juvenile Delinquents." This was located on the outskirts of what would become Anchorage, Kentucky. In 1873, due to overcrowding at both of Kentucky's mental hospitals, the House of Reform was converted into the Fourth Kentucky Lunatic Asylum, with Dr. C.C. Forbes as its first Superintendent. The following year an act of the legislature renamed it the Central Kentucky Lunatic Asylum. In late 1887, it received its own post office, called simply "Asylum". The following year its name was changed to "Lakeland", and the institution was commonly referred to as "Lakeland Hospital" or "Lakeland Asylum". By 1900, its official namehad been changed to the Central Kentucky Asylum for the Insane. By 1912 it was known as Central State Hospital. Comparable institutions are Eastern State Hospital at Lexington in Fayette County and Western State Hospital at Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. All three were administered by the Board of Charitable Organizations. The secluded, rural setting was typical of such facilities in the late 19th century, as such an environment was thought to be beneficial for recovery from mental illness. However, not all patients had mental disorders - some suffered from brain damage, mental retardation or were simply poor or elderly. The early years of the 1880s were marked by repeated allegations of patient abuse. In 1879, Dr. Robert H. Gale was appointed superintendent. In 1882, conduct was investigated in the "ducking" or near drowning death of a patient. He was later exonerated of the charges. Gale was followed by H. K. Pusey in 1884.

I was just a patient here. I was admitted for panic attacks and was a voluntary walk-in. They admitted and took out an MIW on me “since my husband owned a gun”. While I’m here I received zero therapy, allowed no soap except baby shampoo, not allowed panties, not allowed a bra and they give you a white t- shirt to wear. The food was barely edible and then a fellow patient exposed himself to me and traumatized me further. The proceeding night and day staff refused to move the offender and he followed me around laughing and taunting. The next day the social worker found out what happened and arranged for my release that day. Some of the nurses here were very caring and did their best. But the doctors are absolute trash and this place is extremely traumatizing. All they have done is make all my issues 10x worse. I wouldn’t let my dog go here or eat their food.
Patient Myself HONEST REVIEW I was diagnosed Bipolar 1, and received Lithium and Abillify shot. 5 Stars to the team in Unit G, but not all. The Discharge team was subpar and my psychiatrist only helped me with my tooth. Dr.Good was good help from her. Mike or Michael sorry for saying wrong names was perfect on his study on medicine. His confidence made me confident on my choice of help. All nurses on Unit G have a true heart and may have their own visits so never underestimate the help. Cindy was a nice older female and she made me quit smoking and picked a date to stop vaping overall. The nutrionist helped me continue being a vegatarian for being tall and skinny. 136 6'4. So I needed guidance. The techs have an amazing culture and background individually and some may be a family already. My Psychologist was amazing too and gave me recommendations on my path. They were impressed and all patients have the same talent but our trauma we hide will be the problem. You will not SMOKE! NO SMOKING SUCKS ! If you can't handle go to the brook. Both are amazing options. Joshua tested my teaching skills in chess and made sure to answer my questions on fitness. Security is all friendly faces and do round checks. I called a male lone wolf newer guy and he helped check the doors were locked. What made the stay rough was other's so if you had someone go and had a bad experince it's the others. But that's their problem at the same time no offense. Get over it and move on it's about YOU or THEM. Unit G was granted private rooms so it felt great. Church service is amazing here too Edited Part Discord is HiImLoki#1251
I was held involuntarily and abused in the psychiatric care unit in April 2022. I reported incidences internally multiple times that week and all I got was someone looking me in the eyes saying, "I'm sorry. I hope it gets better."
This place is horrible! I was a teen with anxiety and signed my self in. Big mistake I had an anxiety attack and hugged my mother while she visited for some reason they didn't like that. They then forced my family to leave. This caused me to have an another anxiety attack. Instead of trying to calm me down they drug me to a room and tied me down. I have extreme claustrophobia but they didn't care. Almost broke my arms getting out. They came in and added more restraints then dosed me with something. I still have traumatic night terrors because of the ordeal. I also witnessed people being abused and mistreated. Shame on you for hurting fragile people who needed your help. I believe God has or will repay you unless you repent.
I was inpatient at the brook, norton, and then sent here in late 2017. Out of the three I would have to say this was the best. Norton just couldn’t keep me long enough to get me stable. Some of the nursing staff was rude but the treatment and care I got was fantastic. If I ever need to go back this is where I’d want to stay. They were also pretty good about letting my parents and husband come and visit while there.
This place is a Living Nitghtmare ! I've had a daughter sent thier from UofL Psych hostpital on a M.I.W from a social worker that was working the whole units patient care...My daughter went to get help at Uof L willingly, then when doctors couldn't figure out whatever kind of meds she needed to be on SHE Got sent to Central state hospital without my knowledge they already set up a pic up time by ambulance, so when I was finally and I mean finally able to speak to a doctor he said my request for a different treatment facility was too late, since a ride was already scheduled. So she got shipped to Central State Hospital unwilling an I still after 8 days of her being thier at state hospital not been able to establish a correct pin# for her,do not know what unit she is in,do not know who her psych doctor is and have never been able to speak with a nurse at all ... This is not a comfortable situation, as I live over 2 hours away .I'm very upset especially when I have med p.o.a.on her !
I escaped from this place when I was brought here I didn't need go-to this hospital after the cops thought I should be here. A long with the courts I had all my doctor's therapist convinced even in eps I didn't need mental health treatments even court system said wouldn't be bad idea if I did. Need to Seek out such treatments I escaped csh they don't know a thing on how I done it I almost got caught once when a csh hospital member from there recognized me out in the streets I got away I almost didn't doctor felt I should be here I dodged capture long time and going for it my freedom I feel I will ' be ok enough carrying on threw out life without a doctor's care and planning hey no medications maken me feel different I rather don't take so I did what I had to do to escape unless you ever been a patient here you wouldn't understand how much it means to be free I have been escaped long time and they have never found me I've been AWOL a long time I have found out the best escape from any mental health system I use it to my freedoms and csh will never will find me. Or on how I did it.there I love been free and not there taken there medications they say I need. I escaped csh the greatest feeling when your free and don't wanna take medications and been behind those walls
Great considering i was a patient for 3 wks in March. Classes and food were great. Staff needs considerable improvement based on the treatment and the mental patients they receive. This treatment facility is better than The Brook, Our Lady of Peace, and the VA. The VA sends alot of MI patients there.
My family drove all the way out from our house just to see a family member just to be told that the kids aren't allowed to visit even though we asked if we needed an appointment to have the kids there and they said no. And it's a 1 and a half drive from where I live. And then we overheard the front desk people talking about us and saying "too bad" about the fact that we traveled all this way for no reason.
Although CSH provides very good care of their patients, I am very disappointed that they refuse to relay any messages to their patients. I believe talking to a friend or family member when they would like to would help. If they don't know the phone number, who does anymore?, and no one can provide it, the patient is unable to do this. Why not? I don't understand
