Private Piano Teaching Since 2004.
Julia Thornton began studying piano at the age of five. She graduated from Kent State University in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. She had an emphasis in choral/general music and piano, studying under Dr. Jerry Wong. She student taught at East Woods Elementary and Hudson Middle School in Hudson, Ohio in the spring of 2008. She also was a long-term substitute teacher for the district the following school year.
Julia held a graduate assistantship at The University of Akron from 2009-2011, studying with Dr. Mayumi Kikuchi and Mr. Philip Thomson, receiving a Masters of Music degree in Piano Performance. During her time there, some of her assistantship duties were private teaching, accompanying, and collaboration in the modern work "Alcances" by Bruno Louchouran in conjunction with The University of Akron's percussion and dance ensembles.
Julia has been teaching private lessons since 2004. She is currently teaching out of her home in Stow, Ohio, Hudson School of Music, and Fairlawn School of Music to many levels and ages.
Aside from teaching piano, Julia is also certified and licensed to teach Kindermusik, a developmental music and movement class for infants and toddlers. She enjoys teaching these rewarding classes at the Maestro awarded Kindermusik at Western Reserve Center for the Arts.
Julia has been actively involved as an accompanist. She has accompanied many voice and instrumental recitals, concerto competitions, ensemble works, and Kent State University's Women's Chorus. She has played in pit orchestras for many shows, including: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Thoroughly Modern Millie, A Grand Night for Singing, Marsha Norman's Tony Award winning musical The Secret Garden, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, and The Music Man.
