Charlotte Blume School of Dance
The Charlotte Blume School of Dance offers instruction in Classical Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Lyrical, and Children's Dance. A graded training system is used for all disciplines and with it's diversified and growing staff, the Blume School has the ability to offer high quality training in all areas of dance.
For over forty years Charlotte Blume and the teachers of the Blume School have taught some 15,000 students at it's studio (located in the heart of Hamount) and in after school programs in Cumberland County. The Blume school has been instrumental in introducing arts programming to North Carolina Schools and continues to provide after school programs in Cumberland County Schools.
All Intermediate and Advanced classes are held at the main studio located at 1312 Morganton Rd.
Classical Ballet is the principal focus of the Charlotte Blume School of Dance. Classes are offered for children ages 3 through Adults. Charlotte Blume, Director and Principle Teacher at the School is also the Artistic Director of The North Carolina State Ballet, which rehearses its productions at the main studio in Hamount.
CLASSICAL BALLET CLASSES & LEVELS
GRADE I - Beginning students are placed in a Grade I Classical Ballet class. These classes are structured and grouped by age.Grade I students are grouped with children 5-7 years of age. Class time is divided into barre exercises,stretches, center floor exercise and dance movements.
GRADE IIA & IIB - Classes are grouped by age and training. this grade is divided into levels, as there is extensive material included.For the serious and older student the level can mean the introduction to Pre-Pointe. More advanced barre exercises along with more advanced center floor exercises with combination steps and diaginal dance progressions are used. Age appropriate choreography, for demonstration at the year end recitals is taught.
GRADE IIIA & IIIB - Grade III Ballet is the start of Intermediate classical Ballet work.
Grade IIIA Students learn beginning Pointe technique and increasing foundations including Pirouettes and beginning Waltz.
Grade IIIB students will do more advanced Barre and Center Floor work along with Adagio, Center floor technique in Allegro(fast movement), Pirouettes and combination steps, diagonal turn combinations and beginner grande elevation technique(jumps). Many students will take 2-3 years to accomplish this level.
GRADE IV and UP - Ballet students in Grade IV and up are intermediate to advanced students, usually in their teens with significant training and experience. These students will continue with the foundations learned in Grade III adding more complex technique and choreography.
PRE-SCHOOL DANCE
Children in Pre-school dance take a combination class of Ballet, Tap and Gymnastics. Students learn basic Barre
exercises with careful attention paid by our staff to proper placement of feet, arches, arms, posture and the way the body is held. All Ballet and pre-school dances are taught with correct French terminology and students are encouraged in the learning of the terms. Children learn rhythm and basic musical counting. The Charlotte Blume School of Dance has been successful in developing techniques for teaching the young child correct use of muscles and body so they understand it and can apply it. Classes for pre-schoolers are offered at various times in the evening, daytime and on Saturday afternoons. Each class is 1 1/2 hours and will include 30 minutes each of Ballet, Tap and Gymnastics.
