This rock outcropping atop Lookout Mountain has been known by many names over the years including Cherokee Rock Village, Little Rock City, Sand Rock and Sandrock. It is believed to have been of ceremonial importance to Native Americans. The view of Weiss Lake and the surrounding area is spectacular. Cherokee Rock Village has been popular with rock climbers since the early 1970s even before there was a road to the site. Just as with Cornwall Furnace, the society pushed for years to get the site turned into a public park. Society President, Col. Robert N. Mann, was authorized by the Cherokee County Commission to begin negotiations with Georgia Kraft to acquire the site in December, 1973. In 1974, Georgia Kraft agreed to donate the 20 acres of land that encompassed the outcropping. There were stipulations that the site had to be developed into a park and an access road had to be built to the site. The access road to the site would be built by the county. The county soon decided more land would be needed to make a usable park and negotiations resumed for additional acreage. Once again, Col. Mann began talks with Georgia Craft and The Nature Conservancy in November, 1976. In April, 1977, The Nature Conservancy purchased a total of 200 acres from Georgia Kraft for $15,000.00 for use as a public park. This 200 acres included the 20 acres that been involved in the prior negotiations. This accomplished the Society's goal of the site being preserved as a public access area. Today, the site remains a popular place for rock climbers, hikers and others who go to enjoy the outdoors. Some scenes for the film "Failure to Launch", starring Matthew McConaughey, were filmed at the Cherokee Rock Village.

A beautiful hiking/camping spot. Really well maintained picnic areas and bathrooms with showers. Everything looks new including the playground. Amazing views. My dog loved it and so did I. Don’t miss the gift shop. Lots of great items.
What a great place to go on a family trip, girl trip or a getaway date with your significant other…Northern Alabama has beautiful natural landmarks. The waterfalls were amazing! We also chilled by A Lake it was peaceful. The videos do not do it justice The waterfalls are not a part of Cherokee Rock Creek.
Absolutely beautiful park with breathtaking views. Friendly park rangers and staff. Amazing areas all around the park for rock climbing. Lots of established and safe-looking anchors already placed in rocks for climbing, with the ability to add much more. With the amount of rocks located in this park, I am sure you every skill level, from beginner to expert, can find an easy or challenging rock to climb!
We camped over the weekend planning on hiking the area. The campground was nice plenty of campsites to choose from with fire rings and some have picnic tables but not all. The area is very busy with climbers and people at the playground. The camp ground was pretty loud with cars driving through all night well into early morning and people walking down the roads talking all night. The hiking trails were not easy to find and the trails themselves were not clearly marked. If you're used to using blazes there aren't any but the trail is marked with diamonds of different colors marked high in the trees not at eye level or easy to spot.
This place has spectacular views and excellent rock climbing/boldering/exploring opportunities! Towering rock "canyons", fat man squeezes, and tunnels abound! This area is secluded and wild feeling. We saw birds, lizzards, and many types of wild flowers there. This place is best explored by older kids through able body adults. There are no handrails or safety equipment helping it maintain an authentic wilderness feel. They have built up some areas with a board deck overlook, bathrooms, covered picnic area, vending machines, and even a playground for little kids. I would bring a water bottle, snacks, comfortable athletic shoes, bug spray, and a headlamp to really explore this place. Plan for 2 to 3 hours if you want to see it or climb it all. As of July 2023 it is $7 per car for a day pass and $18 for primitive camping. Playground: Small, but new playground. No shade, but does have benches for adults. The playground is close to some large rocks that are a good starter for young kids. Restrooms: Men and women's restrooms. The water was not working July 4th 2023. Picnic area: Covered picnic area on concrete pad right next to restrooms. There are other picnic tables scattered around the rocks and under trees.
Terrific views. Climbing if you're inclined. Good rock hopping. Nice people. Showers, potable water and electricity at the pavilion.
Been climbing here since 2008, and it will forever be one of my favorite places in the world. Camping right on the cliff line and watching the sun rise and set over the lake is magical. The climbing is just ok, but the overall experience of the place is perfect. It also had nice clean and convenient facilities, which is always a perk. Love it here!!
This place is so nice and has beautiful views and many attractions. It has a playground for children, camping sites, a building with a store, bathrooms, a space outside with tables and shade, and of course, you get to go explore the rocks and the beautiful nature surrounding! The workers are very nice and helpful. They have a public grill near the camping sites, and many people were having a great time! I will definitely come back.
I live in Florida and there is no other place closer for rock climbing than Alabama indoor climbing excluded. The crags are quite nice. Good bathrooms, nice camping area but overall super nice routes if you are a 5.10's climber.
Beautiful area for rc crawling and exploring. We keep going back because there's no place like it.
