The Chicago State University History Program, in the Department of Geography, Sociology, History, African American Studies and Anthropology, administers four separate program options: 1) an undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in History (HIST); 2) an undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in History with Illinois state secondary education teaching certification
(HSST); 3) a post-baccalaureate non-degree program leading to Illinois state secondary education teaching certification (TCHI); 4) a graduate program leading to a Master of Arts in History (MA in History). The department also offers a minor in History. Undergraduate students may choose from areas of concentration that include: the United States, African American, European, African and Latin American history.
The program's current mission includes four parts: 1) providing a quality education for students in the department's major and minor degree programs; 2) ensuring that students' educational experiences prepare them for a variety of career possibilities in education, government, and other professions; 3) encouraging the development of students' leadership and service potential through sponsorship of extracurricular organizations; and 4) promoting Chicago State University as a place to obtain a quality higher education experience.
Presently, the faculty are working to bring the department’s mission fully in line with the Chicago State University’s mission of offering to a diverse student population a quality educational experience in our major and minor options that feature a rigorous set of courses taught by an engaged and supportive faculty, enabling students to transform their lives by realizing their academic goals. All the History faculty demonstrate teaching excellence, active research and service to the university and community.
