I can only speak to our experience in Day Surgery. From the time we walked in the door, until we left 9 hours later- we were treated with kindness, compassion, empathy, and respect. I can't say enough about how appreciative my husband and I are for the fantastic staff who took such wonderful care of our child. Everyone from security- Super Mario and Just Ken- started our day out with a smile, our Child Life Specialist Joanna was amazing, the techs Nancy and Alexis were so patient, our nurses especially Meg were incredible, Dr. Mooney was fantastic- everyone we came into contact with really made sure our child's day went as well as possible. We're so grateful we were able to be at CHOA- we definitely felt like our family was in the best hands.
The most dismissive emergency department ever. We were in and out in 4 hrs so the wait wasn’t terrible. However, the condescending tones of the entire staff makes me believe they are trained to be so dismissive. Literally, feel like I need to invest in an oxygen tank since they were dismissive of my daughters super high respiratory rate, as I already know emergency medicine. I expected so much more compassion, gentleness and delivery of bedside manners. Let’s pray their services are never needed again, as I have zero trust in these people to genuinely even care.
My son received a bone marrow transplant at Egleston in 2020. I stayed with him for 32 days in one room during COVID-19. The worst experience ever. The nurses are rude, and there is no help for parents. When my son passed away, there was not a single phone call or a card from doctors who cared for him for almost two years. I felt that my son was just another medical record number for this hospital.
CHOA is not the same I will say, but what is nowadays. I’m just glad they finally admitted my daughter after 4 ER visits. They found inflammation around her brain and abnormal fluid around her heart & lungs. I feel so much better & my daughter is feeling better. Thank you to the doctors/nurses at CHOA. Special thank you to Dr N. Blair
My family and I have been trying to receive my brother's oncology medical records since July 2023. It is now almost October and we have not received any records. My mom has called multiple times and has been given different information each time. After the initial request, she received a letter in the mail a few weeks later stating that they needed the death certificate. She sends in the death certificate and then weeks later she receives another letter stating she needs a court order showing that she has the right to obtain his records. As ridiculous as that sounded, my mother called the medical records department again and spoke with a "supervisor" who told her that the previous request was incorrect and that she didn't need a court order. More weeks go by and still no records. She calls again and after being on hold for over 30 min, she's told that the "supervisor" will call her back. "Supervisor" calls back and leaves a voicemail stating that they are working on the records and we should receive them soon. Weeks go by again and no records. My mother calls back today and they feed her with the same ridiculous story that she needs to obtain a court order. Why is there such inconsistency in the information that's being shared?? Why is it taking almost 3 months to receive electronic medical records??? No one actually seems to care about how distressing it is to be given the run around about records for my little brother who is no longer here. Either this office is just very poorly run and/or there is information in those records that they don't want us to receive. Until we receive these records, we will continue to complain until it is widely known how insensitive and unprofessional this office behaves towards families.
Attempted to have my 14 month son seen in the ER, I left because at that point he was extremely irritable and it was 3 am. the wait was ridiculously long and they were allowing many other people ahead of us even though they weren't there before us. I attempted the next day hopeful for a better experience since it is a children's hospital and it's close to home and the wait was again 3+ hours. 2 hours into my wait they had us in a room I asked when they doctor will be coming they told me a doctor had yet to be assigned. A nurse heard my son screaming and crying and asked if he had any medicine I replied no. She returns with Motrin and I immediately stop her and tell her no ma'am no thanks. I already had to leave yesterday because the wait and my son being irritable he hasn't ate no physician has evaluated him and I will not have my insurance billed a dime if I leave again because we are not being cared for with the urgency I expected coming into the ER. I am currently still waiting to see a doctor an hour after that conversation! And one of the nurses told me it's been a 5-6 hour wait lately! For a children's ER? AS IN EMERGENCY ROOM? Never again!
Horrible staff. No empathy, compassion, or care in the world for sick, uncomfortable children. I’m disgusted at how my husband & baby were “cared for”. The wait time to be seen by a doctor was ridiculous! Honestly the worst experience we’ve ever had at any hospital!
Worst experience ever. Dr. Hwu was extremely rude and unprofessional to me after I expressed concerns regarding my son’s treatment plan because it conflicted with an aspect of our religious beliefs. She then proceeded to mock and belittle every follow-up question I had; the whole situation felt surreal because of her childlike how ironic, right? demeanor. As a first-time parent with a one-year old in the ER, every question in the medical treatment plan is valid, ESPECIALLY if it conflicts with your religion, despite another’s personal convictions or lack thereof. The first doctor who came by reassured me that my son being in the ER was not my fault as his current medical condition is not uncommon for children his age who exclusively breastfeed while Hwu placed the blame on me and mentioned child negligence. I have no idea how someone this passive aggressive can work with children and grieving parents. I hate that I immediately thought this woman has no family of her own because someone so angry can only really be sad. I’ve worked as an independent contractor at CHOA several years ago and never had a bad experience until I was the parent of a patient myself. This doctor needs a basic course in bedside manners, emotional intelligence, and general cultural awareness. I was told someone from the hospital would reach out to me regarding my experience, but no one did, so I’m sharing here in hopes that this could potentially help someone else avoid religious discrimination by this physician. Lord, have mercy.
I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. My son got injured. I took him to the emergency room. From 8pm to 12 am nobody takes care of my son. I had to take my son back home and wait till tomorrow to take him to another hospital. He was covered with blood but it doesn’t mean nothing to them. I requested to speak with a supervisor, she was the worst human being on the planet. She is just wicked. She is rude and didn’t even show empathy. This is disgusting.
I just recently moved a week ago from Chicago to start new with my 4 kids and of course my oldest only daughter fell really sick and I mean couldn’t walk, talk, nothing. I had to take an Uber to the nearest ER which moving forward never will do again. But going back to the main point we were transferred to the children hospital of Alt and I can’t Express all what I’ve experienced in this post but honest to goodness this is the best I mean best hospital to come with your child. They go over and beyond to assist in making sure all is well even when they’re off duty at home. I am just moved with so much gratitude and praise. They were able to get to the bottom of my daughter issue and tackle it and you would t even think she had what she had. I wish I can name all the nurses in the ER and 4th floor staff but you know who you are Thank you Thank you thank you. And big hugs and kisses to the surgeons, Doctors and just everybody. THIS IS THE HOSPITAL FOR YOU KID DO NOT SECOND GUESS.
