Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children

Description

In 1928, Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children opened in the Old Fourth Ward east of downtown Atlanta at 640 Forrest Avenue (now Ralph McGill Blvd.). It opened with the financial support of Thomas R. Egleston Jr. In the first year the 52-bed facility was open, 605 children were treated.HistoryThe original hospital site was on the north side of Forrest Avenue on the east side of Fortune St. . Today the AMLI Parkside apartments occupy the site. The hospital contained the original Dolly Blalock Black Memorial Garden, dedicated to Elizabeth "Dolly" Blalock, wife of Eugene R. Black, Sr., president of the World Bank.In the 1950s Egleston became the pediatric teaching hospital affiliate for the Emory University School of Medicine, and in 1959 relocated to the university's campus. In 1959 the Atlanta Housing Authority purchased the Forrest Avenue site and planned a 350-unit complex there, which Black groups had argued for to relieve overcrowding in the Sweet Auburn area to the west. White homeowners complained that this would mean Black encroachment eastwards, and so City Council aldermen refused rezone the site, offering instead to clean up the Buttermilk Bottom slum.In 1987 the hospital opens a medical-psychiatric unit. Today the unit is one of only six university affiliated units especially for children in the United States.

"Located on the Emory University campus in DeKalb county, Egleston hospital offers many services including an Emergency Department and cardiac and transplant centers."

I just recently moved a week ago from Chicago to start new with my 4 kids and of course my oldest only daughter fell really sick and I mean couldn’t walk, talk, nothing. I had to take an Uber to the nearest ER which moving forward never will do again. But going back to the main point we were transferred to the children hospital of Alt and I can’t Express all what I’ve experienced in this post but honest to goodness this is the best I mean best hospital to come with your child. They go over and beyond to assist in making sure all is well even when they’re off duty at home. I am just moved with so much gratitude and praise. They were able to get to the bottom of my daughter issue and tackle it and you would t even think she had what she had. I wish I can name all the nurses in the ER and 4th floor staff but you know who you are Thank you Thank you thank you. And big hugs and kisses to the surgeons, Doctors and just everybody. THIS IS THE HOSPITAL FOR YOU KID DO NOT SECOND GUESS.
They charged $1800 for an emergency room visit, which my daughter received zero services. She saw the doctor for five minutes. No medicine, no X-rays, no products——she was just sent home with the doctor inaccurately saying she was fine. They somehow think it’s acceptable to charge someone for absolutely nothing.
Attempted to have my 14 month son seen in the ER, I left because at that point he was extremely irritable and it was 3 am. the wait was ridiculously long and they were allowing many other people ahead of us even though they weren't there before us. I attempted the next day hopeful for a better experience since it is a children's hospital and it's close to home and the wait was again 3+ hours. 2 hours into my wait they had us in a room I asked when they doctor will be coming they told me a doctor had yet to be assigned. A nurse heard my son screaming and crying and asked if he had any medicine I replied no. She returns with Motrin and I immediately stop her and tell her no ma'am no thanks. I already had to leave yesterday because the wait and my son being irritable he hasn't ate no physician has evaluated him and I will not have my insurance billed a dime if I leave again because we are not being cared for with the urgency I expected coming into the ER. I am currently still waiting to see a doctor an hour after that conversation! And one of the nurses told me it's been a 5-6 hour wait lately! For a children's ER? AS IN EMERGENCY ROOM? Never again!
Worst hospital service i have ever seen. They don’t have doctors available in the Emergency dpt. Long and long wait. No response. Doctor don't show up for hours. Went to show my Nephew in ER, and was in the Hospital for more then 6hours and yet the dr. Dint show up and nurses had no ETA and clue.
Overall a miserable experience with my four year old son. Fortunately my son was not in a fatal condition at that moment because the staff would not have cared. We sat in the waiting room for three hours and during that time I watched a frantic mother run in with her toddler in and out of consciousness and bleeding profusely from the mouth. No one gave her the time of day. The mother was trying to get someone to please check on her son for her, she stated he had just had a tonsillectomy a few days prior and could now be hemorrhaging and bleeding into his stomach. At one point she even loudly asked if this was even the emergency room because no one even cared. I spoke up because I am an EMT and told the lady at the desk that this could be a fatal condition for the child and he needs to be checked on immediately. The desk lady said "ma'am I'm not medical, she'll just have to wait." Excuse me, but her job is medical as she is a front desk check in for an emergency department she should be the very first line of triage and have a little knowledge to notice emergency situations and priority levels. This whole thing shook me and made me very uncomfortable to be there with my own child. I thought about leaving but we were called back right then. This was our first time at choa and I had very different expectations with it being a children's hospital. I assumed it would be warm and caring but the staff was very cold. The rooms were awful and uncomfortable, the bed was basically an ironing board. The triage nurse said my son's blood pressure was low but the nurse who took us back three hours later didn't even recheck his vitals. He was not hooked up to anything. I asked for a cup of ice water for himwe were there for dehydration and severe post surgery pain and the nurse said wait for the doctor before giving him anything and left us and then we didn't see anyone again until the doctor came in two hours later. I explained why we were there to the doctor, she said ok let me go look at his chart and left. A little while later a nurse came back with a double dose of his pain medicine but no explanation for it so I told her I wasn't comfortable giving it to him until the doctor explained why. The doctor did come back and explain everything and make me comfortable about it. Overall my son eventually got the treatment he needed to get better but it was the worst experience to get to the results. I would not ever walk my child in through there emergency department doors again unless it was through an ambulance where the EMTs could already start treatment. I've attached a photo of the awful bed we were on for four hours.
My son was discharged yesterday morning and we cannot say thank you enough to the staff that cared for him! After HOURS at a local hospital ED, the doctors said that he would be better off at CHOA. Transported to CHOAs ED and they immediately went to work trying to find out what was causing his white blood cell count to spike so high. They looked at the CT scan done at the hospital and noticed that one of his kidneys were turned around and enlarged! How the other hospital missed it is beyond me. They admitted him and after 5 days got his symptoms and the infection under control. I want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to the ED doctors for taking the time to really look at his CT scan. During our stay, Doctors Maduro and Delaney did a wonderful job! Nurses Courtney, Leigh and Hannah were nothing short of exceptional!!! The medical tech Anna was just as wonderful!!! You guys really went above and beyond making sure our needs were met. My wife and I are grateful for your generosity, empathy and smiles. You are all the reason why our son healed so quickly. With Love, The Gregorovic’s
Part 1: On June 23rd at approximately 10:30 pm, there was a knock on our hospital room door. Before I could say come in, a blonde Caucasian woman came in without me saying come in, leaving the door cracked open behind her while I WAS PUMPING. She was rubbing hand sanitizer on her hands and did not introduce herself but went straight to my daughter’s hospital bed. She began to reach in and touch her, at which point I asked her to stop and put on gloves BEFORE touching my child. She was visibly offended and went to grab the gloves, but NEVER put them on. Her next statement was she was the charge nurse, and her name was Cait. She did not introduce herself upon walking into the room. She did not say what she was there to do, but instead automatically went to address my family in the room. Her next statement was that visiting hours end at 8 pm and only 2 adults were allowed. I explained that it was fine and that my family would leave shortly, as we respect the facility’s rules and will abide by them. However, my family had been coming for the past week and no other staff had addressed them being here after visiting hours. My family that was in the room were my elderly parents and my 14-year-old son. When I said they’d leave shortly, she responded with, “Leave shortly or leave now?” At this point I was completely offended by her crass demeanor and lack of professionalism. She was rude and nasty in her delivery and responses. Furthermore, she took offense to me saying she should not be trying to touch my baby WITHOUT gloves! She left the DOOR OPEN while I was pumping! She even went as far as trying to THREATEN me! As she began to walk out the door, she stopped in the STILL CRACKED doorway and proceeded to say, “Well I don’t like how you’re speaking to me, and I’ll just call security and the house supervisor for a behavioral contract.” I advised her that how she spoke to me, and my family was atrocious and not indicative of an actual charge nurse. I asked that she leave immediately, as I was done talking and needed to continue pumping without any added stress. She then closed the door. I immediately called the operator and asked to speak with the house supervisor, Peter. He was quite rude on the phone, as he explained that I should not have been transferred to him by the operator without the call having been vetted first. He kept telling me I needed to calm down, although I was not yelling or using any foul or derogatory language. Him telling me to calm down was extremely condescending. I was simply trying to explain what happened and why I was so disappointed and upset. His demeanor on the phone implied that he did not want to listen and was being biased and defensive. Having a supposed charge nurse try to weaponize the security team as a means to intimidate me is so reprehensible! Her abuse of her power based on her position makes it even more egregious! And Peter further perpetuated her behavior by trying to excuse her, saying she rarely behaves like that. How about she should NEVER behave in that manner! He came to the room, and we spoke. He seemed to be more understanding while sitting across from me. I explained again that the rules were not the issues, but her attempting to touch my child, leaving the door open while I was pumping, and threatening to call security & the house supervisor were my MAIN issues of concern. He then said he wouldn’t try to apologize for her behavior, but that I should reach out to the Patient Advocate. He provided me with a card and then proceeded to leave.
My grandbaby was rushed here with pneumonia. My daughter is a young single mommy amd was very scared when her baby got so ill. They took excellent care of both of them. They are professional through and through and I took comfort knowing they were in the best care possible. The security is great and the staff is comforting and friendly.
Would give zero stars if possible. How do you work at a children hospital and you’re terrible with children? I’m just confused. Do NOT bring your child here. We’ve been here on two separate occasions and both times were the worse experience of our lives. The wait will be over three hours. But worse than that, the staff. The staff is extremely lackluster and rough with children. We have four children and have had our share of ER visits. This location will be off our list indefinitely and we will tell all of our friends and family to never bring their loved ones here. Disappointed with CHOA
We are so grateful for the caring and attention we received from the moment we walked through the doors at the ER . To our 2 day stay From the staff to the Nurses and the Doctors . We can not thank you enough my kiddo said the food was great thank you so much
