Chutes is a recreation class Provincial Park near the community of Massey and the perfect place to spend the weekend or rest during a trip along ON-Hwy 17.
Formerly the site of a large log chute, built to transport logs around the falls on the Aux Saubles River and move them on to the Spanish River and Georgian Bay in the late 1800s, but the chute is long gone. What's left is the name and the picturesque waterfall, rapids, and white water crashing down through a postcard northern landscape -- Canadian Shield rock faces and pine, oak and poplar forest.
Just downstream is the fine beach on the bend in the river and nearby rock shelves, ideal for sunbathing. Mixed in the sand are occasional bits of bark, the scrapings that are a reminder of the days when logs came tumbling over the rapids.
Stop anytime, but especially for the autumn leaves, which are breathtaking in their various brilliant colours. Follow the Twin Bridges Trail for a remarkable view of the Seven Sisters Rapids. You can also use Chutes as a base camp for exploring the North Channel.
Facilities: Chutes has 130 campsites (56 with electrical service), a pet exercise area, and nature and walking trails.
