Howard gave us a most excellent tour. They have a well thought out history and innovation order to their display. Such wonderful anecdotes. Highly recommend if you have any interest in helicopters.
Informative, educational and inspiring. A fabulous collection of iconic whirlybirds including tandem rotor variants designed by Frank Piasecki e.g., CH-46 Sea Knight - my attached photo. The docents are pilots who are able to explain the operating history and nuances of each helicopter in an understandable, engaging manner. There are educational videos next to each helicopter display that add further context to what you will learn from the staff. Messrs. DiCiero and Northrop are extraordinarily generous and personable. There is also a fabulous collection of scale model helicopters and gallery of photos. This museum is a treasure that is well worth visiting. Plan your visit in advance with a phone call and/or email. Classic Rotors is the best!
Personal tour telling interesting details about the aircraft added a lot to the experience. I enjoyed hearing the stories of trading aircraft and aircraft parts with other museums, finding gems in the desert, and getting aircraft back to the museum. There has been so much care and time getting the aircraft restored. One of Ramona's best kept secrets. It's free, but donation are accepted.
Lots of rare equipment dating back to the early days of rotorcraft flight. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and includes pilots and maintenance personnel.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
What was originally intended to be a short sight-seeing stop in Ramona ended up being a 2+ hour visit to the Classic Rotors Museum, which I found on Google search. The museum is a hidden gem located right alongside Ramona's airport with an abundance of history and incredible machines. Our docent showed us around with incredible enthusiasm and a wealth of fascinating information. This museum has some of the rarest, oddest, most iconic, and all-around fascinating collection of helicopters. Personally, every second at this place fascinated me. Make plans to stay a few hours and take in all the incredible history and detail! I will certainly be back for another visit - I'm already recommending this to friends and family as a must-see destination!
Lots of interesting helicopters there. Some are prototypes you won't see anywhere else. Volunteers here are very knowledgeable. There's a "ancient" flight arcade game there. You kids will love it.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
The people that work here do a wonderful job caring for, rebuilding, and ensuring they know the history of the helicopters at the museum.
Only dedicated helicopter museum on west coast with aircraft restored and maintained, some even still airworthy, by the staff. They have some prototypes, can't be seen anywhere else. Free entry.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
If you like helicopters.. This is a MUST visit. Jump in a tour with Chip and you'll understand someone who has most likely forgotten more about helicopters than you know. I love the fact that their helicopters actually fly, and are being actively being restored.
Wow! A gem in the rough. Chip, the docent made this place come alive. His first question is, "How much time do you have?" If you answer, "We are not in a rush", that puts a huge smile on his face and be prepared to take a very in depth, fascinating trip though the history of helicopters, the history of the museum, and the interesting stories about how all these helicopters arrived at the museum, some of them personally flown there by Chip himself. Be prepared to spend half an afternoon, but whether you are an aviation buff, or even have a slight interest in aviation, you will leave there with a smile on your face.
