Colden is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,265 at the 2010 census. The town derives its name from John Cadwallader Colden, a state senator. Colden is an interior town in the south part of the county. It is one of the "Southtowns" of Erie County.HistoryThe town of Colden was organized April 2, 1827, from part of the town of Holland. One of the first settlers was Richard Buffum from Rhode Island. He purchased 2000acre from the Holland Land Company.GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.5km2, of which 92.3km2 is land and 0.2km2, or 0.25%, is water.New York State Route 240 passes through the southwest part of the town.DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 3,323 people, 1,262 households, and 951 families residing in the town. The population density was 93.2 people per square mile (36.0/km²). There were 1,337 housing units at an average density of 37.5 per square mile (14.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.83% White, 0.03% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.
