Market Hall Home of "The Confederate Museum" since 1899

Description

Upstairs where the museum is located was the territory of the market commissioners. Two tiny rooms for transacting the business of running the market and one very large elaborate hall with a gas chandelier where they held meetings and elegant social functions. The building was used this way until 1861. In the spring of 1861, thousands of young men were pouring into Charleston to become Confederate soldiers and defend the South. They were given supplies, weapons and their orders. It was here in this building where many of these young men had danced not long before they became soldiers.
In 1894 the Charleston Chapter, Daughters of the Confederacy was founded. They immediately began to collect relics and the collection grew quickly. By 1898 this group of ladies became Charleston Chapter #4, United Daughters of the Confederacy. In 1899 the reunion of the United Confederate Veterans was to be held in Charleston. The men decided to help these ladies form a permanent Confederate Museum in Charleston. A call was sent out asking former soldiers to bring their war-time possessions to the reunion for donation to the new museum. The enthusiastic response showed that a large building would be needed to house the collection. Since the Mayor and the city councilmen were all former Confederate soldiers, it was only natural that they selected Market Hall for this purpose. The same building where they had gone to become young soldiers became the place they brought their relics to be preserved for the future. The Confederate Museum opened here in June, 1899.

Excellent museum. They also have an elevator as it is on 2nd floor. Lots of history and reference books re/ soldiers who fought for the Confederacy. Friendly, helpful staff.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10
Simply amazing. We didn't have enough time to view every exhibit on the museum, but we loved what we saw. They have tons of items that are labeled in glass cases. Everything from uniforms to bullets. They provide information on what they are and where they came from and they detail the events of the war. The staff are very nice. It was very cheap admission with a lot to look at. We will definitely be coming back!
Very interesting place, seeing I didn't even know it existed until today! Confederate museum, caution written on the sign, take it for what it is... history - learn from it so it's not repeated. Pictures included to show kind of artifacts preserved by the Daughters of the Confederacy. Military and Veterans enter for free, which was nice for my husband.
It is small and doesn't have very much in it. It is run by the daughters of the confederacy and seems to me more of a fund raising operation than a museum, $7 to enter and you can see the entire museum in less than 10 minutes even if you read the exhibitsVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
If you support the Daughters the Confederacy, this museum presents a particular view slated towards "The War of Northern Aggression" and the valiantry of the Southern soldiers' noble cause. Perfect for the student of modern racism. If you don't support the Daughters of the Confederacy, do not use money to support this museum. Note, if you're not familiar with the daughters or the Confederacy, you should know that they are an organization used to re-establish the social order after the fall of slavery that is, Jim Crow Laws. As noted in some of the other reviews, this seems like more of a fundraising operation rather than a museum- this is fairly strong evidence of what they are continuing to do.
Excellent Museum. It has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, admission charge among museums in Charleston. Usually no wait to enter. It is staffed by volunteer docents mostly since the museum is on the smaller side, so please be kind to them. They have a wealth of knowledge if you have questions and are the friendliest women in the world!
Wow! What a cool market to come visit! The history and all the local shops were amazing. This is a must see when visiting Charleston. Buy a basket and talk with the locals. It was a really unique market.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Let's start with what you can't find at the market. It seemed like it was never going to end. Something for everyone.
A great little museum, set in the perfect location. On display are a variety of personal possessions and artifacts. Besides the impressive collection of swords, sabres and muskets, the military jackets, ladies clothes and the shoes make you realize that they were people; just like us. We are only separated by time.Visited onWeekdayWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$16–20
