For anyone interested in archaeology, material studies, and Cornell
Newly launched in 2012, The Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies (CIAMS) is an over-arching body to provide and coordinate training in various approaches to studying material culture. Our Archaeology Program will continue to offer an undergraduate concentration and a Master or Arts degree, and doctoral research can be conducted through a number of departments (e.g., Anthropology, Art History, Classics, Landscape Architecture, Near Eastern Studies...) and coordinated through CIAMS if desired.
2007 marked the 40th anniversary of the Archaeology Program, although archaeological work at Cornell goes back to the founding of the University (original faculty member C. Fred Hartt [Geology] conducted what were probably the first excavations in the Amazon in 1869-70). We now have over two dozen core and affiliated faculty members, working in several parts of the world.
The current photo is a piece of Roman glass at the Corning Museum, from our trip there in 2007.
We invite everyone interested in archaeology and its offerings at Cornell to join this group and participate as you can -- current, future, and former students, faculty, and anyone else with an interest. We plan to post announcements of special events here, and would be happy to see others make contributions like updates of alumni activities, photos, anything likely to be of interest to this community. Let's see where people want to take this group!
