The Language House is Cornell University's residential program for immersive language learning.
The Language House offers language immersion communities that interact in Arabic French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish.
The Language House is hosted by Alice Cook House on West Campus and largely housed in Boldt Hall, a beautiful Gothic building with a long Cornell history and some perks exclusive to Language House residents. Currently, all Language House residents live with fellow language learners in Boldt Hall, along with an on-staff, on-site Native Speaker who supports the language community. The community is also supported by a highly specialised team that includes an SA, an admin, and a directing GRF.
Language House residents attend meals four times a week with their Native Speaker, fellow residents, other people interested in speaking the language, and once a week with a Language House Fellow, a professor who speaks the target language. The Native Speakers also arrange conversation hours, trips, and events.
The Language House staff helps organise events, guest speakers, and personalised tutoring, and supports residents with internship, grad school, fellowship, scholarship, and job applications, and provide academic and emotional support. They also keep residents posted on other related events and interest groups on campus.
Language House residents have access to a world-class network of Language House alumni, which spans the globe and includes a broad range of institutions, with an emphasis on government, NGOs, international business, and academia.
The Language House at Cornell University promotes a supportive and congenial environment of language immersion for select Cornell students by providing access to live-in native speakers, faculty, and staff who facilitate programs and activities that enhance students’ linguistic and cultural competence in their target language and cultures in order for them to be prepared to flourish in a global society.
