My Story:
Throughout my childhood, my mother hosted the elaborate holiday meals, showers, intimate dinner parties, birthday parties and other events that everyone looked forward to. Yes, she made it look easy. Yes, she leveraged her good taste, and drew from an impressive range of crafting, cooking, and baking skills in this work. Yes, she created visually stunning tablescapes before food styling was a thing and meals and sweets that were gorgeous to look at and simply delicious to eat. Ever mama’s girl, I was by her side picking apples from the tree in our backyard for pie, butter and jelly. Molding chocolate candies and decorating cookies to give neighbors and friends for Christmas. Frosting and decorating layer cakes. You get the idea.
Mom’s card parties were renowned; folks knew to come dressed to impress, ready to dance, ready to lose at spades (she and my father were formidable partners), and hungry. Her cocktails were strong and her party spreads were legendary. And make no mistake: I helped prepare it ALL.
As a reward for my (I’m sure extensive) help prepping for these parties, I got to stay up long past bedtime and eat giant hunks of mom’s famous rum cake. I’d find a spot on the stairs just out of view of the adults—and watch them two-step, hustle and bump, listen to the cadence of their trash talking and laughter, giggle and blush at their grown-up jokes, soak up the feelings of welcome, togetherness, family, and community I helped my mother create…

Somewhere along the line I became obsessed with the jam, the candy, the cake—all the sweet parts—but with Curtis & Cake, I try to make the same kinds of connections my mother made so seamlessly between delicious food, hospitality, togetherness, and community. I guess the bottom line is that when you are with those you love, the “sweet parts” happen everyday.
Curtis & Cake specializes in bespoke layer cakes for every little and big occasion, petits fours, gourmet marshmallows, meringues, and moon pies. However, I bake and make a broad range of goods and confections; let me create the sweets table for your next event.

I decorate cakes with fresh flowers, greenery, or fruit, meringues, and other confections—like my spicy mixed nut brittle for example. Whatever’s pretty and will add another layer of flavor.
