Humble is the best addition to the great stretch of restaurants and bars along East Johnson. The pies, both sweet and savory, are the best I've ever had and play on whatever is in season. My favorites include the Banofee pie, raspberry ginger handpies, and most recently the zucchini goat cheese quiche. Pies aside, the owner is incredibly kind, welcoming, and clearly puts so much heart into her excellent work. Pay humble a visit. Better yet, make it a part of your routine! You won't regret it.
Small and simple, no frills, all about the delicious pie! Stopped in to grab a few on my way home. I was concerned they would be sold out because I've heard nothing but good things about Humble's pies. I think the rainy day worked in my favor because there was a nice selection of pies left. I grabbed one of each of the sweet pies. They're small but they're the right size. The price seems about right. So far, my wife and I have tried two of them and they are so good. Sweet but not too sweet. Buttery, creamy, and the right amount of chew in the filling. The crust is perfectly flakey, though I wish it had a bit more butter flavor but that's just me. Crust is usually my favorite part of a pie but Humble pies you kind of need to eat as a whole and it works so well. I don't miss eating the crust all on its own. I will definitely be stopping in more often!
I've only tried the chicken pot pie, but I can easily say that this is a gem of a place on Johnson St. Stop in and grab yourself a treat if you're in the neighborhood.
My love of humble knows no bounds. These pies are the best I've ever had! No soggy bottoms, huge variety of flavors every season, and perfectly portioned. About once a month I swing by and pick up one of every flavor in the case. I've ordered custom pies for my birthday, out-of-town family visits, and even as catering for work events. My top favorites are Salted Honey, Pippi's Pancakes, Salty Captain, and Chicken Pot Pasties. Jennie may be a humble pie maker, but it is my firmly held belief that she is a buttery angel sent from the pie gods. Do yourself a flavor and let this pie grace your mouth with its presence.
Humble. Sweet and Savory Pies is the best addition to the Johnson/Paterson neighborhood. It is wonderfully fitting that a pie shop would move into the old Sophia's bakery. Jenny makes the most delicious pies with a buttery, flaky crust and creative fillings. My friend from England claims that it is some of the best pastry she has ever eaten. I would highly recommend stopping by for a pie or three.
Probably one of the cutest small hole in the wall bakeries I've ever been to. The owner is super sweet and the pastries are wonderful. The chicken pot pie crust is flaky and delicious while the chicken is moist and flavorful. I especially enjoyed the chocolate bourbon walnut dessert as well since I found it not overly sweet and packed full of chocolate flavor. Definitely a place to visit again and again!
A small locally owned business with really tasty handcrafted pies, turnovers and desserts along with a few savory lunch pies. We purchased several little pies to share with our neighbors and they were a big hit! They have unique flavors, like pear with goat cheese and rosemary, along with more traditional ones like cherry or blueberry. Their crust is amazing, flaky and tender. The pies are small, so bring a friend and you can share a few different flavors! If you want a full sized pie, you can order ahead.
One bite and you know they take their pie seriously! If the pies both savory and sweet weren’t enough, the business is wonderfully accommodating for events. Humble hosted a private anniversary event for us and it was all the guests could talk about for weeks. Well worth planning ahead for a visit!
Jennifer made pies for two separate events/parties and it was a delicious pleasure to work with her! she went out of her way to accommodate a special request and took care with the little touches to make the mini pies look beautiful. all of the pies were delicious & her crusts are so flaky! the blackberry custard pies were especially . highly recommend for your special desserts!
When I came back from France, this is one of the first bakeries that I came back to in Madison. I felt like even though the bakeries in Paris are amazing, we are very lucky right here in Madison to have bakeries that are just as good, or better. This bakery is owned by a woman who does all of the baking herself. She thinks of new, creative, and delicious recipes all the time, using local, in season ingredients whenever possible. I absolutely love the maple chess pie and salted honey pie.
