Danvers State Hospital Cemetery

The campus of the State Hospital has been redeveloped into housing but the main gothic building still stands. Facing the main building while on the sidewalk across the street, head right. You will encounter a small stone patio with historical information and photos about the hospital. From there, follow the gravel path down the hill behind the condos until you reach the farmland field I was there in winter but there were still corn cobs on the ground from some lucky birds I assume. You'll see the entrance to the cemetery ahead on the right. It is very well kept-- clean and quiet, a good place to contemplate how people with mental illness or who are just outside the "norm" are still treated in our society. They have done their best to identify each grave and bring honor to these people who died in such difficult circumstances.
