Spanish was first taught at Toronto in 1853 and Portuguese in 1948. The Department offers programs in languages, cultures and literatures of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds. You can learn to speak Spanish or Portuguese, or improve the practical knowledge you might already have of these languages. The department’s offerings in language, literature and culture include all levels of language, as well as film, literary history, cultural studies, language for business and individual courses in topics of current cultural or political interest. You can combine your studies in Spanish and Portuguese with courses offered in other areas, such as history, anthropology, political science, other language and literature programs, or even the applied and natural sciences to create a challenging undergraduate program.
