We have established an aquaponics project at Diamond Bar High School. Now, we seek to expand and improve the system we have. Stop by and check it out!
Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture (raising of fish) and hydroponics (growing of plants without soil). The fish waste contains plentiful amounts of ammonia which is converted into nitrates and nitrites that the plants need to grow. Once the plants absorb the nitrates and nitrites, the water is cleaned of the fish waste and cycled back into the fish tank. This makes aquaponics a nearly self-sustainable system (everything except for feeding the fish).
Our advisors are Ms. Angela Jensvold and Mr. Anthony Tietz. The aquaponics system is located in Ms. Jensvold's room and Mr. Tietz helped bring this project to life. Currently, Samuel Chiang and Sophia Deng are actively working on the project. Grant Shao and Dana Li, alumni to the project, remain in touch and continue to provide suggestions for and assist the project. Samuel is a junior and Sophia is a senior in high school.
