The family and I had the opportunity to explore this for the first time. And it was amazing. One of our favorite shows was the birds of prey. We will go back next year!!!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We had so much fun dressing up and playing our part in this Victorian Christmas tradition!
This years Dickens was the worst to date. There were almost no vendors! On Streets that had 20 vendors in the past there were 3! We do not want vendors who only bring there "homemade" stuff. Most of this is ugly and bad quality. Please bring back vendors from previous years! We have been going to this even for 15+ years and the last 4 have just gotten worse. This event use to be about shopping for Xmas presents and enjoying looking at people in custom. Now we paid $20! to walk the same shops we shop all year.. Please fill those streets with vendors like other events that come to the strand or we will just stop coming. Watching the same historical group of old ladies in their dresses isn't worth $20.
I love Dickens on the Strand. Many fun shows and great Christmas carols a reminder of what used to be.
It ain't what it used to be! I agree with the previous reviewers about how much fun Dickens Festival used to be, but this year the Friday night portion was mixed at best and lacked continuity. Crowds were thin. Annoying men on fast bicycles not victorian era bikes or clothing buzzed the streets and pedestrians carelessly, dangerously, making walking and shopping at street vendors risky.. The atmosphere was off a bit: Bars and shops on the Strand blasted out modern music, not period music from the Victorian age; the Scottish eggs were way too SALTY and they had no mustard available at the stand; few people dressed up but those few that did were wonderful; and the merchants on and off off the Strand openly dissed the event or had never been to it. On a high note, in a candy shop we asked a group of carolers who had been singing at Tremont House earlier if they would favor us with a tune, and they did and sang one brief song BEAUTIFULLY! Maybe Saturday night will be better? Galveston needs to get it together and vendors need to get on the same page about creating a Dickens era vibe if they want people to show and enjoy themselves.
It's a fun day out people watching, enjoying some food and beverages, and taking in the extravaganza. We've been to 2 or 3 of these with a bus load of friends. The Strand is a great walkable collection of venues, shops, restaurants, bars, and general fun. It's even better filled with Victorian characters, pirates and steam punk cosplayers. It remains a crowd pleaser.
Such a fun experience! Will definitely be back next year!
Our third time and the weather has been in the 40s to today which I would guess is close to 80. I give so much credit to those who take part dressing up. It can't be easy to deal with all the weather changes. The parade was awesome, the has bubbles blowing to mimic snow.
As the night advanced, half the crowd appeared to be from the Rennaissance festival.
We had a great time..so much too see.
