Description

Dinosaur State Park and Arboretum is a state owned and operated natural history preserve occupying in the town of Rocky Hill, Connecticut. The state park protects one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America. Its Jurassic-era sandstone-embedded fossil tracks date from about 200 million years ago.HistoryThe Rocky Hill dinosaur tracks were uncovered in 1966, adding to the extensive legacy of fossil discoveries made in the Connecticut Valley since the 19th century. A bulldozer operator noticed the tracks while excavating the site for a new state office building. The site opened as Dinosaur State Park in 1968, the same year its 7acre dinosaur trackway was memorialized as a Registered National Landmark.FeaturesGeodesic domeThe park's 55000sqft geodesic dome (see picture at right) encloses some 500 tracks while another 1,500 remain buried for preservation. The tracks are from the early Jurassic period and were made over 200 million years ago by a carnivorous dinosaur similar to Dilophosaurus. The tracks bear the name Eubrontes, the term for fossilized footprints invented by geologist Edward Hitchcock. The tracks range from 10 to 16in in length and are spaced 3.5 to 4.5ft apart.

I've been wanting to come here for probably close to 30 years but I was always just passing through the area. Finally, I decided to actually pull off the highway, stop, and take a look. I'm glad I did. The museum isn't very large but there's a lot of interesting information displayed in a creative and accessible way. When I was there, there were groups of families with little kids as well as a group of college students doing some research. I also really enjoyed they trails outside. They covered a good mix of marsh, grassland, and New England woods. I also liked the reptiles and amphibians displayed in the museum. They also show films on different related topics.
I really enjoyed this place! The best part is the area of real Dino prints that you walk over. But they also have a cool area for kids to learn that has animals. Beautiful, well melt and well marked trails in the back plus a picnic area. We drove 2 hours to come here and we’ll worth it!
This was a cool find for my family. We were traveling through New England exploring as much of each state as we could. We were looking fir the big tourist attractions and the random local things that you might find "only in your state". This park falls into the latter category. While excavating for a government building in the 1960's they discovered a bunch of dinosaur tracks and other fossils. They built a visitors center around them to preserve the site and allow visitors for many years to enjoy them. Outside, there were nature trails and other interactive activities for children to enjoy. This is not a place we need to see a second time but was really cool to experience once.
While visiting my daughter in Connecticut I saw a sign for the Dinosaur State Park. Luckily it was right around the corner from her house! I had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised! I am a fourth grade we teacher and we discuss fossils. I not only got some great pictures, but also bought a trilogies fossil from the gist shop to take back to my students!
So much fun! The little exhibits they had were cool and I loved the hiking trails. A great place for anyone who loves dinosaurs and a great outing for parents to bring their kids.
This place is fun to kill a couple of hours. The footprints are super cool and the other exhibits are really informative. I got to see them feed a grumpy old iguana and that was definitely the highlight of the trip. The trails are fun and, as a grumpy old man myself, a little challenging. Nothing difficult, just making sure my foot placement was good so I didn't turn an ankle or break a hip. Would definitely recommend.
Great place for kids and adults. Amazing foot prints highlighted with lamps so the real impact is realized.
One of the best parks with a single focus we've ever visited. The site was being developed in 1966 for a state government building when an alert bulldozer operator realized he was opening up prehistoric fossil beds. This is one of the world's premier sites for dinosaur tracks, which require different geological conditions to be preserved than dinosaur skeletons. They offer a great collection of half-hour kid-friendly videos in a comfortable auditorium. And the grounds: jaw-dropping landscaping emphasizing species that reflect what the dinosaurs were walking through over 200 million years ago. This is an A+ park, and we hope CT can find the funds to open up the field adjoining the dome to display more tracks that have been buried in soil to protect them.
The trails are good, possible to bring a stroller on the short loop. the museum is a bit tired but the footprints collection is amazing. Great animations in the summer. Free EV charging station.
Just the fact that the museum is built around REAL DINOSAUR TRACKS is so cool! That’s the highlight of the place. My husband and I took our son there because admission is cheap and kids under 5 are free. The only complaint I have is that most of the hiking trails aren’t stroller friendly. There were lots of tree roots and rocks and inclines. If you’re going to bring a stroller, take the red trail, since it has a boardwalk on most of the path and it brings you right back to the front.
