Dobie Center

Description

Dobie Center, named after J. Frank Dobie, is a privately owned twenty-seven story residence hall located on the University of Texas at Austin campus. In addition to being a private residence for students, Dobie also contains a two-story mall, restaurants, and specialty stores. The property features a pool, fitness center, two sport courts, six elevators, and an industrial-styled cafeteria.HistoryThe building was designed by J. & G. Daverman and Associates in 1972. Upon its completion, Dobie Center was the tallest building in Austin, surpassing the Texas State Capitol, which had held the title for nearly 90 years. Dobie was the first modernist building to exist on UT's campus. The building underwent a US$10 million facelift in 1990 to replace its then brick façade by exposing the glass underneath. When classes began in the Fall 1989 semester would-be residents of Dobie Center were temporarily relocated to the Radisson Plaza Hotel. On November 11, 2006 a fire, started by an improperly extinguished cigarette, broke out on the pool deck of Dobie Center causing an estimated $600,000 worth of damage. The pool deck reopened in late April, 2008. The fire was contained to an area outside of the residential tower. This structure was an old wooden deck that has been replaced by a concrete structure. The Dobie Mall was completely remodeled by the Nix Group in the 90s and is now a hub of student activity and shopping. The mall is a two-story shopping and food center featuring a food court, stores, and even a chapel. The food court today features seating for 500 and various assorted independently-run food outlets. In 2014 the Dobie Center became managed by Campus Evolution Villages, marking the start of over $4 million in renovations, including new hardwood floors, a cafeteria face-lift, and an updated movie and game room. However, there was controversy during this time due to allegations made by many students that Campus Evolution Villages did not hold their end of a bargain..

We've moved an entire team into the Regus facilities over a week ago and so far it's been a fantastic experience! The facilities are clean and quiet, very pleasant to work in. We have a private space, but it opens up to the community space, which is great. They have multiple meeting spaces with different set ups; great for small groups, large presentations and idea storming sessions. In addition, the staff has been easy and pleasant to work with. Very eager to assist with making sure we have what we need, assisting with setting up meetings, and other office duties. The entire team has been pleasantly surprised at how seamless this move has been for us. We're excited to spend the next few months here!
Pros: Plenty of desk space in the lobby area. Private offices come with desks & chairs. Some even have shelves! The kitchen services include cleaning dishes and some options for coffee, tea subscription. The nightly cleaning assures clean spaces everywhere, even private offices. The staff is friendly & helpful. Cons: No privacy. Adjacent offices have paper thin walls and no separation over head. I can hear private conversations clear as day. The power plug in our private office is broken and routinely breaks our power charging devices. There is no regulation over the ping pong table nor the lobby area. It's not a designated quiet zone and the staff does not apply rules to this spot. It's always rowdy. Ping pong games will last hours. It'll be loud! It's the OPPOSITE of a co-working space. The free conference room is DARK. It's dimly lit. It also has a leak in the ceiling. There's room for improvement. The ping pong table could be removed to allow the space to feel productive again instead of a party zone for the members of the office who do not have work to do. Or, institute a 30 min - 1-hr check-out policy so members do not play for hours.
This location is nice, but like all other Regus locations as well as business practices, they are a terrible company to lease with. Just feel free to read all the reviews and you will see why.
My. First time at the Dobie was 1972. Was visiting a friend at UT. It was pretty incredible for a young Texas Redneck to see. They had projectors flashing pictures on the walls. But.......then......there was a magical head shop. It was called The Magic Mushroom. I immediately said that I have to move to Austin. Which I did and spent many a great night at Armidillo World Headquarters.....broken spoke..... Austin port house. It was a hippie fest. Miss it very much but Austin has gotten too big.
We are hiring UT Austin college interns and selected this space as it is right on the UT campus. The space is hip has a modern urban feel to it. Common areas such as coffee bar are very nice and clean. Staff is alway available and helpful.
The setting is nicely furnished. Unfortunately, the ceiling leaks and nobody cares to fix. The only "solution" is place trash cans to collect water. The buckets fill and stagnate. Nobody even empties them and mosquitoes fly around the area as a result. Think twice before renting this space.
I have a virtual office space here.. can I use the common area like conference room?
Great location for meetings! Proximity to UT campus is a major plus! And there’s a Target downstairs!
Great place! Wonderful people! The living place is great for both campus dorm rooms and Airbnb!
Great staff! Super friendly! Downtown Austin and next to UT Campus!
