Douglas House (Lovells Township, Michigan)

Description

The Douglas House, also known as the Douglas Hotel or the North Branch Outing Club, is a sporting lodge located at 6122 East County Road 612 in Lovells Township, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 2000 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.HistoryThomas E. Douglas was born and educated in Canada, and moved the Michigan to come to work as a bookkeeper in his uncle's lumber mill in Saginaw. In 1893, he moved to Grayling to manage the R. Hansen Lumber Company. Riding the wave of the lumber boom, in 1898 Douglas built a sawmill and general store in what was then the small logging community of Lovells. Fire destroyed the general store in 1903, and Douglas built a new store. In 1916, as the lumbering era was winding down, he constructed the Douglas House and established the North Branch Outing Club to draw tourists to the area. He used electricity generated in his mill to power the hotel. With the rise in the popularity of the automobile, Douglas targeted wealthy travelers as club members, and drew members from the new Detroit automobile aristocracy such as Henry Ford and his son Edsel, John and Horace Dodge, and Charles Nash. Douglas had his daughter Margaret manage the hotel, a position which she occupied until it closed in 1971. Margaret continued to live in the hotel until her death. In 1996, the Douglas House reopened as a sporting lodge known as "North Branch Outing Club."

Historical unique inn with great funk. Spotless and great hot breakfasts. We stayed in room 1 which has a bathroom. I loved the old furnishings but our mattress was old and sagging. The bedroom door had a non working latch: it kept opening which compromised our privacy. When I spoke to a male manager about it. he said the house was too old to fix it was impossible since the house keeps moving.. nevertheless I hope to return again to do more fly fishing
We planned this fishing trip last minute and were happily surprised to come across this gem. The fly shop was very helpful thanks Logan and Hunter. All the staff were great and made us feel very welcomed. It has great charm and is well maintained. Not far from lots of key locations. Rooms: The rooms have great charm to them. It's a well maintained old building with great history. Expect some creaking floors and doors. Wonderful dining area. Cool seating areas throughout including multiple porch with views of the river. The bedrooms are small but comfortable. Plenty of shared bathrooms are adequate and convenient. Nearby activities: Fly fishing, kayaking, hiking, nature viewing. Food & drinks: The breakfast was wonderful and far more than expected.
This place is like going back in time 100 years. The decor is all old antiques and the house is in great condition. The breakfast is amazing and the staff is super friendly. Fishing right outside the door. You feel very much at home hereRooms: 4/5
My family of 10 stayed at The North Branch Outing Club the first weekend in August 2022 and I have to say the new owners were amazing! Shelby & David made us feel as if we were in our own home. They went out of their way to learn all of us by name and to make sure every person in our family was happy. They even made my daughter and nephew chocolate chip pancakes one morning. The breakfast was AMAZING. The rooms were great and the beds comfortable. The showers were FANTASTIC! Huge waterfall shower heads, hot water and great water pressure. The kids loved it and we felt like we were part of their family. It was amazing just sitting on the front porch and relaxing and so refreshing to go down to the stream and sit on the bench and wade in the water. The history of the place was also so cool! Knowing that I had my coffee in the same place Henry Ford or Thomas Edison may have had their coffee or a nightcap was so neat! I would highly recommend visiting here and we can not wait to go back again! If I could give them 10 stars I would. They deserved that and more.
This historic B & B right on the Ausable River was super cool. The rooms were very comfortable with period charm. The owners are so very friendly ! The history is so amazing with Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, Ernest Hemingway, Henry Ford and others have stayed here. The breakfast was so delicious !! Can't wait to come back missing it already - Kevin B Klein
We love this place! We have been lucky enough to stay at the lodge twice this summer. The owners are wonderful and have already made us feel like family. Shelby cooks a fantastic breakfast and it is always fun to talk fishing with David. It is a special place and will be a regular stop for us.Rooms: 5/5
I had such a pleasant stay here, it was so welcoming and incredible. I have a little food sensitivity problem and Shelby and David were so incredible and made sure that I had food for breakfast. I got an incredible tour of the inn with a lot of history which is fascinating seeing that throughout the inn. I would definitely come and stay again!
Definitely not high tech. You will have difficulty finding a place to charge your phone. Not necessarily a bad thing!Rooms: 5/5
This place is amazing. So much history, it was like staying the weekend in a museum. Dave and the staff could not be more accommodating or friendly. If your a fly fishing inthusist this is a great place to visit Dave truly made us feel at home. He also took the time to instruct us on the proper methods to fly fishing. Truly and aesthetician weekend
I “discovered” NBOC while watching a fly fishing video. I was intrigued by its story and location along the Au Sable River. Given its esteemed guest list, how had I never heard of this place? Entering the NBOC is like stepping into a time capsule of northern Michigan sporting history. I spent two nights there and it was a such a treat. The Innkeepers and staff made me feel so welcome. I fully enjoyed learning about the building, the river, and the famous Au Sable Longboats. And the breakfast in the large dining room was delicious! I can’t wait to visit again.
