Dr. Kraig Burgess has distinguished himself as an expert in the field of Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. Upon completion of his Internship and Residency in General Orthopedics, Dr. Burgess performed an additional year of Fellowship Training. This fellowship specific training in hand and upper extremity surgery included an enormous variety of reconstructive procedures and extensive trauma training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. U.S. News and World Report consistently rank The Cleveland Clinic as one of the nation’s best overall hospitals and the Orthopedic Surgery Department is among the top 5 year after year. Dr. Burgess has also successfully completed a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery.
Dr. Burgess has been involved in both clinical and bio-mechanical research. He has been published in The Journal of Hand Surgery, the professions most prestigious journal. He has also presented nationally.
Dr. Burgess’ area of interest includes the treatment of traumatic, acquired and reconstructive conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow. His philosophy focuses on patient education and decision making. His goal is to educate the patient and allow them to make informed educated decisions regarding both their surgical and nonsurgical treatment options.
Dr. Burgess remains at the forefront of his profession, serving as a research investigator with TOCA for Xiaflex Collagenase, which is a minimally invasive and cutting edge treatment for Dupuytren’s joint contractures of the hand. He has also been asked to consult for major orthopedic device companies regarding product development, design and implementation. He also founded a monthly academic meeting of hand surgeons from around the valley where current concepts in hand surgery are discussed and challenging case presentations are shared as a means of improving patient care. He is also adjunct faculty at the A.T. Still University of Osteopathic Medicine in Mesa, Arizona
While his patient mix mostly includes infants to grandparents and housewives to the injured worker, he also provides care to high demand professional athletes from football players, golfers, and gymnasts to professional supercross and BMX riders to fellow physicians around the valley. Dr. Burgess is also a firm believer in giving back. Dr. Burgess volunteers for an organization called LIGA International “Flying Doctors of Mercy.” Dr. Burgess will travel with his PA, Lisa and volunteer pilots via single engine aircraft to remote parts of Mexico providing much needed medical and surgical care to some of this country’s most needy children and adults. Dr. Burgess and his wife, Jamie stay busy raising their son and daughter. They are members of Christ Church of the Valley. Dr. Burgess spends his free time competing in Triathlons of all distances, including the 140.6 mile Ironman New Zealand in addition to other areas of health and wellness.
