We had a wonderful tour here with Spirits Alive. Sam was very knowledgeable, and always happy to answer questions, and even showed us around a little more after the tour was over and continued to answer questions. Interesting place. It was open and free when I visited on a Summer Saturday. I understand there's an erosion issue so it's a fair bit overgrown which made it a bit difficult for me to explore as much as I would have liked as I'm recovering from a stroke and a bit unsteady. Lots of urn and willow motifs with some variations but not too many. Some of the stones have been badly eroded I don't know my minerals but the white stones suffer much worse than the grey but most are in good, readable state. I didn't see anything breathtaking ly unusual but a good variety of late 18th to mid 19th century work. Parking is a pain in the immediate vicinity but there are garages nearby in downtown and Portland is a cool city to walk around.
A wonderful piece of Portland history. Entrance was free for the cemetery and parking was easily accessible on the street. Most of it is on a slope, so wear some good shoes. Grass can be high in some areas and has to be moved on occasion to see the headstones, but lends some otherworldly charm. A must if you’re in the area.
This is a very historic cemetery in portland. We spent several hours walking around and admiring the beautiful, old headstones. Very peaceful and serene.
We took a tour with our guide Tom and had a delightful time. He was knowledgeable and passionate about the cemetery making the experience that much cooler. So much history and hidden stories. Tom liked to infer about what might have happened based on dates and historically accurate challenges. We really enjoyed our time! Thank you!
Nice quiet walk amongst new friends. It is shocking to find a headstone with my grandfathers name on it.
Locked and only open for tours after you pay and at 4pm. Don't know why they lock a cemetery during the day
One of my favorite places of solitude in the city. Beautiful, historic cemetery that's unfortunately had more than it's fair share of cruel vandalism through the years. You can just feel the history and significance of the land when you walk through the heavy, wrought iron gates. Anyone with an interest in history, particularly the history of Portland and New England, would find this place magical, as I do.
Absolutely fantastic! It was the highlight of my trip!! I was fortunate enough to be part of a very inquisitive group who all had good questions and were engrossed in everything our docent/tour guide had to say. If you’re looking for something different and have a fascination for the unusual, I can’t recommend this highly enough. My only regret….I can’t be there for their Scandals, Scoundrels & Sinners tours!!!
Wonderful colonial cemetery. I personally found nearly a dozen stones pre 1750. Longfellows grandparents, and several "kings officials" a testimony of pre-american society.
