For current students, prospective students, alumni and community members to stay connected by sharing information and updates on school activities.
We offer both an undergraduate and graduate level degree for the field of social work (BSW and MSW).
The BSW program is a generalist degree that covers a variety of disciplines related to the social work field. These disciplines include social justice and change, empowerment, diversity, social policy, and working with clients at the micro, mezzo, or macro level of social work. The BSW program prepares students to work in a diverse range of fields related to social work.
Eastern's MSW program prepares students for advance practice serving one of three populations: families and children; persons with serious mental illness and or chemical dependency; and the aging. It currently serves approximately 250 students who are primarily experienced social workers, bachelor of social work graduates, human service administrators, or persons embarking on a career change from the greater southeast Michigan region, northern Ohio, Ontario, and central Michigan areas.
At its core, Social Work requires a passion for helping people and a commitment to social justice. Our graduates help people and communities tackle problems rooted in poverty, racism, ageism, violence, or illness. Social workers serve people of every age and background as they script new futures for themselves.
At Eastern Michigan, we strive to promote social well-being and affect positive change. The School of Social Work aims to educate, empower, and enrich the lives of students as well as members in the community. Through this page, students, faculty, and community members can keep up to date on what is happening in our school. Stay current on events, activities, and social issues that effect our community.
The School of Social Work at Eastern Michigan University prepares graduates for rewarding careers that strengthen people and communities and advance the social work field.
Our undergraduate program prepares students for graduate school or generalist practice in agency settings. The graduate program focuses on advanced practice serving one of three groups: children and families, people with mental illness or chemical dependency, or the aging.
Empowerment
Our graduates help poor, oppressed, vulnerable and underserved people to build competence and confidence as they improve their lives. The EMU Social Work program prepares students for culturally competent and gender sensitive practice.
Collaboration
Our graduates work with individuals, groups and communities to alleviate social problems. They strive to enhance community problem solving, helping clients to engage their environments in ways that improve social function and provide opportunities.
Leadership
Our graduates work to advance social welfare policy that builds upon a community's strengths.
Inclusion
Our graduate program is built for the non-traditional student and gives priority to applicants who've demonstrated a commitment to the school's mission, currently work in social service agencies, and who need a part time program with evenings and weekend classes.
