In 1990, four Brothers from Mexico in America, tired of so many struggles but those small successes were enough to light up their souls and embark in a quest to make a name for themselves and make the family back in Mexico proud. Moving from California all the way up to Virginia, they found a town in need of Mexican Flavor and so, on December 12th, 1990 in Harrisonburg, El Charro was born. The passion for a "good, clean, and fair" food and consistency for many years has set their roots with so many regulars across Virginia and travelers from around the globe.

Stopped by for a lunch date with my wife. Seated quickly, and the food came out super fast. This restaurant sits you down with chips, salsa, and a tasty dip. My chimichangas were good, but the quesidilla dish wasn't great.Food: 3/5
This is definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. It’s centrally located and easy to find. The parking has ample spaces and even overflows to the back. It’s walking distance to several hotels. And right off historic route one. I have always found this restaurant very clean and welcoming. We have always been greeted right away with a smile shown to a table, and sometimes chips and salsa are on the table before we even finish sitting down. With the chips and red salsa comes a salsa Blanca. Which is actually native to Virginia not Mexico. It was actually developed in Norfolk Virginia. I have never had a bad meal here. Their seasoning is wonderful and their ingredients are always fresh. I have been there for lunch and dinner. And the service is always excellent. Pricing as well is reasonable for the freshness and amount of food presented. I love their Decour. They do have a couple of TVs running, but they also have beautiful, murals and paintings. there’s two types of seating, in a booth or in barrel style chairs. It is definitely my go to place whenever I have guests.
Let me start by saying service was excellent and the staff was extremely friendly. I’m going with 3 stars because the service was great but the food was below my expectations for a stand alone Mexican restaurant. The quality of the food will prevent me from visiting again. The food was what I would expect out of a mall food court. The chicken was over cooked, and the beef tasted dry and old. The quesadillas were quite soggy on the bottom and harder to cut through because of the overcooked chicken. Our food came out within 10 minutes of ordering… which can be a good thing if you are in a hurry like we were but a bad thing if you were expecting fresh cooked food.
The margaritas were good as were the chips and salsas. The enchiladas supremas were the worst I've ever had. Maybe they were simply under sauced. The soup and the grilled chicken were passable. The high ratings from other reviewers must be based on the large portions for a low price or a lack of a good baseline for quality Mexican cuisine. I won't be back and don't recommend this place as a dining option.
Great family restaurant, very fast service and meals are a reasonable price... The chips and white sauce they serve while waiting is amazing.. and mix in your you food you won't be disappointed Kid-friendliness: Totally kid.friendly all the way down to a plain cheese quesadilla Wheelchair accessibility: Yes
Always great!! Walked in at 8:30 and was out by 9:05. We didn't feel rushed even though they closed at 9. Thank you again for a wonderful meal.
I just finished my "dinner" at El Charro. Mega thick Margarita glasses make it appear you are getting twice as much as what it actually holds. Enchiladas were extremely disappointing. It appears that there is little supervision in the kitchen. Soccer on the bar screens was for entertaining the employees. Glancing into the kitchen should be recommended prior to ordering. I don't think I'll be eating ANY Mexican food for a while after this.
It’s a nice, clean, and big restaurant. It’s very easy for them accommodate big groups. It’s very nicely decorated. The service is good and fast. The waiter was attentive and friendly. The food was okay. The salsa was a bit watery.

Awesome Awesome authentic Mexican food always hot fresh. Great hospitality customer service worth every penny. Reasonably priced. Even now with COVID-19 allowing select numbers dine in. Highly recommended if in there area
