About

Upscale Cocktail Lounge and Grill

Description

Once labeled “Mobile’s Renaissance Man”, Eugene Walter was a screenwriter, poet, short story writer, actor, puppeteer, chef, translator, editor, playwright¸ cookbook author, novelist, costume designer, and raconteur. Eugene spent most of his adulthood domestically in New York and abroad, in Paris and Rome where, in addition to his own writings, he was a founding member of The Paris Review and appeared in Fellini movies. Also known for his lavish parties, he entertained the likes of T.S.Eliot, Truman Capote, Dylan Thomas, and fellow Mobilian Tallulah Bankhead. While known to be a storyteller of epic proportions, Eugene claimed to have carried two items wherever he traveled. The first was a box of Alabama red clay and the second was a stuffed Monkey named Coco.
It is with this spirit which we designed Eugene’s Monkey Bar. We look to provide Downtown Mobile with a cocktail bar and lounge that through its food, drink, and design is a place that you could find in a city such as Paris, Rome, or New York but maintains a spirit that is distinctly Mobile. The food menu will maintain a distinct Southern featuring local ingredients. The cocktail menu will feature classic and modern cocktails in addition to our versions of some of Eugene’s old cocktail recipes. Eugene’s Monkey Bar will be an ideal setting to have a drink after work, before or after a concert, dinner, or a movie. Or better yet, plan on spending the entire evening with us, enjoying the one of a kind view of Downtown Mobile and Bienville Square. The sidewalk café will also provide an ideal spot for all the Mardi Gras festivities as well as private space for functions. Eugene Walter was unlike anything Mobile had seen before him, and with this spirit we hope to provide a drinking and dining establishment that is equally unique. As Eugene liked to say “when all else fails throw a party”

We were there for Valentine's and we can't say enough, the manager, waiter, and chef were so gracious they truly made our night and meal amazing. Now I simply must brag on our food, our meat was cooked to perfection, our garlic potatoes were perfect, we had bacon wrapped asparagus it was so good oh and we had stuffed mushrooms for our appetizers and they were delicious, the cheesecake at the end was the perfect ending. We will most assured be back! Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful and memorable time. Yours Truly, Denise Hall
I have dinner there every couple of weeks. The chef truly puts her personal touch on every meal. The specials are well thought out and will not disappoint! Handmade crab cakes are always flawless. The bar has outstanding cocktails and the mixologist knows her wines. Always a pleasure to have dinner and cocktails at Eugene’s!
I've been here many times before and never had a problem until today. When we got there at lunch there was no hostess so we seated ourselves and grabbed our own menus. I didn't mind that too much but then when we finally did get noticed by the wait staff, they didn't seem to be in a hurry. It took 40 minutes to get our food. I ordered a Caesar salad without tomatoes and a cup of soup. The soup was lukewarm at best and the salad came out with tomatoes all over it. The waitress comped our food which was great customer service but that was just an awful experience.
We were here today for dinner. Stephanie and Blake were the host tonight and must give a shout out to them. They both were wonderful. They informed us before we were seated they were short-handed It will be long wait. They did Excellent with food, drinks and service. Thou wait was long but made sure they took care of the guests. I loved the "Pain killer" drink. Please visit the place and make your mind.
great eclectic variety of food inspired by Mobile writer and artist Eugene Walter. Try the crab cake BLT.
Had the chance to make it to Mobile for the weekend and was looking for a place for brunch. We were not disappointed. This place has phenomenal food and the service was great. The mimosa and bloody Mary bar was one of the best I've ever encountered. We will definitely come back.
It is New Year’s Eve, so I was absolutely willing to cut them slack on speed. I figured they’d be slammed. Thing is, they really weren’t that busy. There were quite a few open tables. Even allowing for the expected business, this was an unbelievably bad experience. There seemed to be a total lack of understanding of how to run a restaurant. Simple things like remembering which tables ordered what were beyond the capabilities of the server. Not which person, mind you. Which table. Every single thing we asked for had to be asked for multiple times. This included silverware and napkins. The food came out in stages over the course of about 2.5 hours. We would have left if we hadn’t just been killing time until the Moon Pie drop. To top it off, the food wasn’t good. Mediocre at best.
Very fresh tasting food. Service should be more knowledgeable and silverware should be spotless for the caliber of cuisine it offers. I was very impressed with the crab cakes. Shrimp and grits were off the chart. Delicious!
Make sure you have at least 2 hours to burn, as it takes this long just to get your food. Also, the waitresses look like they want to murder each other. Nice new place with good atmosphere and decent food though.
Went to Mobile for a funeral, wanted shrimp and grits for breakfast, but they said it was a buffet and its not on the menu, but the waitress Quinn, was really friendly and offered it. Needless to say, I really enjoyed the experience and the staff were nice.
