Fairmount Park (Riverside, California)

Description

Fairmount Park is a park in Riverside, California. In 2011, Fairmount Park, Riverside, California was one of ten public places named to the APA’s (American Planning Association) great places in America. The park is located at 2601 Fairmount Boulevard. The park lies between the Santa Ana River, and Route 60 to the north. It was designated a “Frontline Park” in April 2011.HistoryThe firm who designed Central Park, Olmsted and Olmsted, was commissioned in 1911 to design Fairmount Park. Although Frederick Law Olmsted had recently died (1903), his design principles were evident in the Fairmount Park planning. The primary design aspects of the park were implemented over the following 13 years, ending in 1924 with Lake Evans. In 1985, a tree inventory showed that many of the trees in the reforesting effort from 1911 were still living.Rehabilitation and revitalizationRehabilitation of the park was prompted by flooding and deterioration of Lake Evans and the increase in crime in and nearby the park. The revitalization was championed by local residents such as Pat Stewart, current chair of Friends of Fairmount Park. The rehabilitation efforts began in 2001 with volunteers willing to pick up waste or provide other general maintenance needs for the park. Community effort catalyzed funding for a $2.6 million playground.AmenitiesFairmount Park offers a golf course, two tennis courts, public barbecues, boat rentals (including pedal boats that are handicap accessible), sailing and fishing on Lake Evans, running, jogging and walking on the Santa Ana River Trail, a number of exercise classes held in the park, and the playground. It also has a well maintained lawn bowling court which first opened in the 1920s.

This park is definitely one of the most beautiful places in Riverside. It’s absolutely beautiful, has such incredible historic background, and it’s absolutely huge. You feel like you’re completely outside of the United States, and then back in here when you drive out. The area around is historically beautiful, it’s just a beautiful niche that is nestled in the heart of Riverside.
Beautiful park!! A great place to sit, relax, picnic, and play games with kids and friends. My boys love fishing and buying ice cream. The only down part is that the restrooms are dirty and there are way too many vendors… other than that… I love the events like the car show… pretty cool!
I dearly enjoy coming here for my routine runs or even to just walk the park with my partner.. the park is always hosting a variety of events open to public from low rider car meets to bicycle ride alongs. Also make a lot of use of the basketball courts and believe it or not even the water park area has been occupied by me after a long run in the summer.. plus I absolutely love coming here strictly to visit and order from the local vendors..
A beautiful and senic park!! A great place to sit, relax, picnic, and bird watch with family and friends. Lots of history and features make it a nice area for a walk as well. The Rose Garden is a neat place for pictures and adds to the area.
Very nice park. You can ride your bike or longboard around. Perfect to just hangout and watch the birds. They have a lot of table and seats around the lake. There’s a couple places to park. The main parking lot has a kid playground and nice seating. The other area has fishing
I love the ducks and ponies! I love the trees and the atmosphere. A lot of people are taking professional shots here. A beautiful park.
I love this park. It's usually fully packed on weekends but during the week its more towards the empty side. You can find benches and tables to sit and the water makes a cool breeze
Great park with the big lake. But also one too many people fishing. I’m sure that it is great for them to be allowed to fish here, particularly with little kids. But, at the same time there are one too many people doing just that. Maybe because it was a Sunday late afternoon. I was told that when a couple were there on a Saturday afternoon, they didn’t see that many people at the park, let alone all the people fishing. Nonetheless, it is a great park to hang out and spend an afternoon with family. And it is also an awesome place to do an engagement session. I saw 3 sessions going on simultaneously across the park.
Beautiful huge park for family to hang out and have a nice time. There is a huge lake with ducks and geese. You can do fishing, there's a water splash area for kids, a park, you can kayak there, plenty of vendors selling a variety of merchandise. It's very nice for the whole family to have a family day or reunions, or bbq's.
I drove past this park when picking up some furniture and decided to stop by on the way back. I enjoyed it immensely. A lot of socals parks arent the greatest but I enjoyed this one for all the duck and bird watching, being able to walk around the lake. The atmosphere was festive. There were a lot of food and goods stands not sure about the occurrence of these. A solid playground for kids. Enough grass to enjoy. I spent only a little over an hour taking a walk around the lake before heading home.
