Fernhill Cemetery

Description

Fernhill Cemetery, originally known as the Rural Cemetery at the time it opened in 1848, is located at 200 Westmorland Road in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Renamed Fernhill in 1899, the 125 acre (0.5 km²) cemetery has a special section for veterans of both World War I and World War II, and is the burial site of one of only a few Canadians to ever receive the United States' highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. At the time the cemetery opened, the Church of England was the established Church of Britain and her colonies and as such there is a designated area for Church of England members. In the cemetery's Jewish section, a stone chapel was built in 1950 with the help of Hollywood mogul Louis B. Mayer, who grew up in Saint John and whose mother is interred here. The cemetery contains the war graves of 103 Commonwealth service personnel, 67 of World War I and 36 of World War II.Fernhill has operated a crematorium on-site since 1939; at that time, they were the first crematorium east of Montreal.

Beautiful cemetery with a lot of history. Great for a walk or stroll. Visiting hours end at dusk so be sure to visit during the day. If you are a fan of memorials and headstones, this cemetery has a wealth of riches. If you wish, you can drive right in.
A very beautiful and relaxing place to go. The monuments are amazing and tons of history in that cemetery. I try to go there at least a few times a year.
awesome cemetery great walk, was walking through it for well over an hour and only walked like 25% of the place... some areas are decaying and unfortunately the graves are destroyed near the rothesay ave fernhill sign... but they are like 200 years old
Its a cemetery that is full of incredible history. It really is a beautiful area to walk and enjoy the scenery. It has some of the most beautiful trees to be found in the Saint John area. Having grown up not far from here I know the cemetery well. I was pleased to see recent improvements to the grounds and effort to keep it looking beautiful has been increased. It really looked great on my visit this evening. August 2020.
Very beautiful resting place.
I mean it's all right
