The mission is to improve physical activity levels, healthy nutritional practices, and overall well-being of children and their families within the community.
We know that if children can learn to make healthy decisions and develop healthy habits as young individuals, their chances of maintaining a healthy lifestyle later in life increases tremendously.
Past and Future Events:
Awareness Weeks - Fit Kids celebrates specific health observance weeks/months by providing informational materials to teachers and parents. This information is in the form of (but not limited to) lesson plans, newsletters/brochures, or recommended home activities/practices. Teachers and parents are strongly encouraged to relay this information to their students and children Example: Breakfast week, National Nutrition Week, National Bike Month, etc.
Bike Trailer - Fit Kids has sponsored the middle and high school PE programs in purchasing a bike trailer package, which includes 30 bikes, storage trailer, helmets, and repair kits.
Dance Dance Revolution - Fit Kids has sponsored the elementary PE programs in purchasing a DDR system to use in thier classes. Children in all grades are able to take advantage of this fast moving aerobic activity.
District-wide Fun Run/Walk - Organized weekend activity for the entire family to hike some of the local bluffs. Healthy snacks and beverages are provided along the way.
Fitness Fridays - University students are invited to all elementary schools during noon recess on Fridays to engage students in games and sports activities
Health Expo - Fit Kids has hosted a health expo which provided reliable, pertinent, and age-appropriate health information (alcohol, drugs, nutrition, physical activity, backpack safety, oral hygiene, bullying) to the third grade and the 2/3's multi-age classrooms.
Involvement in Local Run/Walks - Fit Kids has teamed up with several different organizations to provide opportunities for Onalaska families to participate in several run/walks. Team Onalaska has recently had the most success with the UW-La Crosse Turkey Trot, bringing in over 200 Onalaska students, staff, and families. In adition, Fit Kids is currently working to provide student races at the McFlury run/walk hosted by the Onalaska High School.
Movin' and Munchin' - Second grade students participate in this month long activity that promotes an understanding of healthy lifestyles by receiving points/miles for fitness activities and nutritional accomplishments. Incentives for participants are awarded.
Safety Day - The School District of Onalaska teams up with the Onalaska Park and Recreation department to include a day full of wellness and safety activities.
Tasty Tuesday - Students (K-4) taste several types of food from the Food Guide Pyramid, as well as discuss the characteristics and nutritional value of each sample.
Wellness Nights - Students and their families are invited to visit their school and learn about important wellness topics (new foods on the school menu, portion distortion, DARE, etc). The evening coincides with another school/family event at the school (ie. Science Fair, Reading/Math Night).
