If I could go under one star I would. I took the software engineering course, April of 2022 which was a complete disaster. It was the poorest excuse for a "school" ever. They generate interest by showing you doctored stats and playing on the notion that "everybody can do it". Then when you can't get a job they tell you "it's just imposter syndrome!" Aside from one guy named Mike whom they fired because he wanted to change the structure of the school to benefit the students, the "instructors" were not vetted, and really weren't teaching anything. It was like going to a study hall where they just hand you the curriculum and say "Figure it out!". I graduated from the program in Aug 2022, and was not prepared for the job market. The diploma they give you means nothing academically or professionally. My advice is: "Don't waste your money". This place is a complete Fraud.
Poor experience. You are better off watching videos online or going through Coursera. I got to experience 2 instructors for the data science program. Daniel was great. He was engaging and personable. I ended up having to restart the course and got Joseph. I regretted it. I don't believe he should be a instructor at all. I am speaking from previoulsy holding a job that onboarded new hires and trained them. He was not engaging or personable. His approach was not ideal to say the least. He spoke down to you when in a smaller group setting or one on one. He was distracted by his other job at times. I stop reaxhing out to him when I had a question and just started using Chat GPT to better understand. He did very little and did the bare minimum so he could get out and be done within an hour or so for each lecture. If every instructor was like Daniel then I could promote this school but Joseph did not represent the school well at all. His lectures were 1.5 to 2 hours and made sure to engage on what learned and struggled with at the end of the day. He provided us additional material up front and through the course to reference as well. We neve got that from Joseph until the last day. He sent us a bunch of links and videos that are way better then what he provided us. They record the lectures and keep them on You Tube. I had to go back and watch Daniels lectures after sitting through Joseph's lectures. The github material I recieved from both is similar mostly then you can see where Daniel took time to add more lectures and course work that was beneficial. Its clearly night and day, from the lectures, the engagement, the cohort experience, etc. They last phase was crammed with a bunch of stuff that was, at times, over your head. Joseph lost me and some of the others in the cohort. Their was a time it seemed he was talking non sense, in circles, and redundant jibberish that was not making sense. I checked out after that. We had a capstone project at the end of the course. It had to be reviewed and approved by the instructor. I had to redo my project because he decided it was too easy the day before we were to present it. I had to stay up all night and got done two hours before the presentation. I went from a nice preso to something I had to put together last moment. Mind you he approved the topic and data set, recommended that I do it without the time series, and then told me the day before it was too easy to recreate the neural network project and make a regression model for the project. I was very upset and disappointed in the profressionalism of it all. They need to re-evaluate their instructors. The career coach I am working with told me in the four years that she has worked with them that she has only had one person land a job as a data scientist. There aren't many jobs available on the job board for data science. Its mostly intern stuff or jobs for software engineering and some for cyber security from what I have experienced recently. Spend your time and money elsewhere. I could go on and may edit to add more later. I would not recommend bootcamps personally. It was $15,000+ when you could have spent way less on better material. I could send you the you tube videos and the github material from the course and you could do it all yourself with no added value or benefit of needing to pay the school depending the instructor you get. If you want to break into the field, then do your own work or self teach yourself, create a portfolio of the work, and network on LinkedIn.
Flatiron is NOT what it used to be even just 4 months ago. Throughout my 15-week on-campus NYC SWE bootcamp, almost all of the course instructors AND technical support resources were let go. A few of the instructors had been there for 2+ years and were great at their jobs. New CEO is shaking things up, clearly cutting budget all around. I'll say I enjoyed my experience and learned a lot, but for those interested in enrolling in today's Flatiron SWE program, be weary. Additional notes + tips: SWE market is TOUGH right now. Do not expect much in terms of post-graduation support from Flatiron. Expect 5-6 months before you find an entry-level SWE position unless you're seriously good at writing/understanding code. If you decide to enroll, start practicing Leetcode Day 1. This is critical for technical interviews during your job hunt and isn't covered in the coursework.
Wow this used to be closer to my home and used to have such great reviews. Now it looks like they moved and has very bad reviews. Going to go with another option. Thanks to the people who reviewed
I recommended this school for my friend as I saw the advertisement and it was highly disappointing. She still hasn't been placed in a job, there are inconsistencies with coaching methods, and rarely a support system of studying. My friend has a degree already and she is used to rigorous studies but this is by far not an inclusive program for career shifters. There is this assumption that everyone is on the same level of tech learning and skills. She is now left with school debt and no leads from the school for any potential company hire.
While I did learn a lot here and met some great people, they are too money driven for me to be able to recommend this school to anyone. The money back guarantee is a scam unless you think like a lawyer. They also offered no kind of reimbursement for my class after everyone paid for the in-person experience and got the online one. In addition, there was a fair amount of disorganization, such as teachers being replaced halfway through courses with zero explanation. In one course, I didn’t get any feedback on my work because the teacher seemingly vanished.
I wish I can give 0 starts, I also wish I would’ve done better research before wasting my time, money and energy. I have 0 background in tech- as this program claimed to be “beginner friendly”. My instructor Madelyn was no help, even after I expressed myself how far behind I am because I’m not understanding the material. I even asked her for resources that would better assist me and she was no help. This is false advertisement because the flex program still has tests and assessments due not too far off from regular students due dates. Most of the tutors were mean and made you feel inferior because you needed them to thoroughly explain materials. I dropped the program within 2 months or less and i have to come out of pocket a couple thousand dollars for what?! I DO NOT recommend this school to anyone!
My Girlfriend has been in this school for a Month and has had 4 teacher changes. The first two teachers were so bad the whole class had them switched because they didn’t know the material and couldn’t teach it. The Manager taught for a week then passed it on to another teacher who quit after a week. Now they have no clue what they’re going to do some of the teachers she said has been good but overall has been a terrible experience. I don’t even go to the school and can tell you jump off a bridge before you jump into this boot camp !
I have 30 years of investments in ongoing and continuing education. I find it difficult to recommend this school to students or businesses. Perhaps the in-person cohorts might feel differently. But for anything remote, they grant you access to an aging curriculum with insufficient support. Without live access lectures, students take longer to understand. Waiting in line for questions is not the same. Students may fail capstone assessments and feel obligated to keep paying for 3-month extensions out-of-pocket, matching or exceeding the full-time in-person tuition cost, making their overall experience a regret. Some people do not test well. Laughter in the background during assessments does not help. Memorizing large volumes of material is something we do as teens and only a bit is retained. That expectation is not viable for mid-career changers that learn differently and access what they need as they need it. So I feel a mismatch when an instructor goes on about FAANG requirements and 20-something objectives. Diversity is about meeting all demographics, especially when marketing to corporations for instructive services. I am trying to convince myself not to walk away, but peace of mind is worth more than a certificate.
The Flatiron software engineering immersive program was such an amazing experience for myself because it gave me the community, technical resources, and structure I needed to make the transition into software engineering. While there are many free/cheap options to learn coding, being able to gain access to a community of avid learners, leading instructors, staff that cares and will push you towards your professional goals, proved to be invaluable. I don’t regret my decision not one bit. I still have access to their learning/job resources and I keep in contact with people from the program. Once a part of the Flatiron family, always a part. At the end of the day, you get out of it what you put into it - before, during, and after the program. Very grateful for my experience.
