Sub par produce and bad customer service. Checking out the strawberries at the Food Basics on Kent Street, Lindsay.....of 20 the clamshell packages I picked up, not a single package was without a rotten or mouldy strawberry. When I advised the gentleman stocking these packages of strawberries, his response to me was "so what...what do you want me to do about it" when I suggested the rotten fruit should be removed, he responded with "you get what you pay for"....then when I asked if he was serious and if FOOD BASICS was in the habit of selling rotten and mouldy fruit to its customer's, he mumbled something else under his breath and began loading the rest of clam shell cartons of strawberries into cold section behind me. As soon as I walked away, he turned to the area I where I was, with the whack of mouldy strawberries, and proceeded to pile the rest of the clam shell cartons directly on top of the packages of mouldy strawberries. As I carried on through the produce, I also found mouldy, rotten tangerines for $3.98 a bag as well as freezer burned chicken drumsticks for$12.99, DISGUSTING !! Needless to say, I didn't buy these products
Good selection, especially for outside the GTA. Sometimes things are not stocked Saturday Mornings, but that might have more to do with distribution than the staff. Friendly and helpful staff. Biggest complaint I would have to say, and this is not just at Food Basics but is a trend at most grocery stores, is the rushed feeling I get when it comes to packing up the groceries from the checkout, and the congested feeling of the lack of room to keep your cart and your body out of each other's way at the checkout. All in all, I like shopping here, prices are good, and has a great selection!
Good grocer. I find some food basic stores, the produce and meats are not the freshest. However, this is a very busy store and because of that everything seems pretty fresh. The store seems well maintained and is generally quite clean. Also, sometimes you'll get a free show when you go shopping as some of Lindsay's more "interesting" residents shop there and cause trouble for the staff!
Bought Philadelphia cream cheese large container at full price BUT had to look through 9 containers because they were expired 6 days ago. Told customer service who blank faced staired at me until I broke the silence with "So. I just thought you might want to know you are selling a dairy product that expired a week ago", who only then, responded with "there's a dairy manager that takes care of that. I'm dumbfounded at the lack of care towards expired goods. Wonder what Kraft will tell me on Monday when they're open. Too bad. It was a great store.
Produce section is pretty good, nice selection and good quality. Hard to find certain things in the grocery area though. It's normally very busy which wouldn't be a big deal but there are usually only two, maybe three cash lanes open. Also there is usually only one cash available that you can purchase alcohol. The self checkout helps remedy some of this but it's not ideal when you have a cart full of groceries.
Food Basic's New Pharmacy is a pleasure to deal with. I've transferred my file over from a Drug Store and here Pharmacist Joe and his team provide quick, efficient, pleasant service. Everything you could need is there to choose from. I shop the store and find the renovated version quite a welcome. Aisles are well stocked, organized, and merchandise is reasonably priced; associates are helpful and courteous. Congratulations Food Basics.
During my visit to the Food Basics store in Lindsay, I encountered a concerning incident. While at the checkout, a customer/staff member abruptly declared the lane's closure. To my surprise, the staff supervisor, Debbie, displayed a discourteous attitude and declined to process my purchases. I attempted to reach out to their customer service, only to have the same individual respond, asserting their role as a supervisor and defending their actions. This entire episode left me feeling uncomfortable and prompted me to reconsider the extent of our rights as both members of the public and valued customers.
I feel like when it comes to grocery shopping in Lindsay, the cheapest place to go is Good Basics, I think. The produce and fruit are typically already past their Best Before date or they spoil very quickly after buying them. The floors always look dirty. The aisles are too narrow, so you're always almost hitting people with your cart by accident. Their self checkouts are terrible. BUT, with all that being said, kudos to them for setting their prices a bit lower than their competitors. That speaks volumes and that's why I'll continue to shop there.
Bigger than my local store, always have flyer specials. We go here regularly now. Crazy parking though. So many people think it's their right to take 2 spaces.
Produce could be better. But great deals for big families. Variety is great for international selection in a small town.
