Very informative and pretty neat to see how they lived back then easily a 30-60 minute stop, maybe more depending what all you view.
Very interesting and easy layout to follow. Multiple buildings to go through. Tons of plaques with great information. Even a neat "Who was I?" Card to learn more about actual people from the fort. Very interesting history!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
This was a great place to visit. Interesting history, and the place is very well maintained. Staff was polite and helpful. Would recommend visiting if you are passing through and have the time.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
It was interesting. We always enjoy history, but sadly it's always a similar story about how the government and the military came and violently destroyed the lives of the people who were already here, wiped out the buffalo, etc. My favorite part is always looking closely at the Native American arts - the beautiful beadwork, leatherwork, and quillwork. There's not a lot of that here, and some of it is reproduction, for the purpose of example. The site is well kept and well described.
Not everything was open for viewing, but the docent was kind enough to allow me to bring my SD-in-training into the museum & indoor displays such as the Officer's Quarters. Was a very informative museum and I appreciated learning the military history of the area. If you find yourself in Hays; take the time to check out Fort Hays.
Fort Hays was originally named Fort Fletcher and was occupied 1865~1889. It reopened as a historical park in 1929, and it is now operated by the Kansas Historical Society as the Fort Hays State Historic Site. We really enjoyed our time spent at Fort Hays, it was fun seeing some of the buildings still intact. There paved walking paths to see everything and admission was $5 for adults.
Wasn't open. Middle of a Friday and closed. Disappointed again.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
