Mission

We are a community of families made up of parents and educators who believe that children learn best in a safe, nurturing environment, supported by a cooperative partnership of parents and teachers. FHP's approach to early childhood education draws on the strengths of a variety of educational philosophies to provide each child with developmentally appropriate opportunities for social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Through personal experience, discovery, and play (the "work" of childhood), we cultivate children's natural curiosity and foster respect for self, others, and the natural world.

"In 1962, a community of parents worked with Mount Vernon Unitarian Church MVUC to establish a cooperative preschool to serve the Fort Hunt community and beyond. In 1983, Fort Hunt Preschool FHP made the historic Carriage House on the beautiful grounds of MVUC its forever home, where it still operates today 2023!For over 60 years, and located just south of Old Town in the Mount Vernon district of Alexandria, FHP offers a play-based, nature-rich curriculum; natural playground and outdoor classroom; a warm community of parents; and dedicated and experienced staff.FHP is licensed by the State of Virginia."

Our family has been attending Fort Hunt Preschool for over 2 years. We are thrilled with our sons development at this preschool. The teachers and staff are very knowledgable and are experts in early childhood education. We love the nature-rich, play based curriculum. We personally enjoy the parent help days, as it gives us an opportunity to see our son thriving with all of his friends and teachers. I recommend this program to any families looking for a fun community that allows your child to blossom.
I love my 4yr olds pre-school! It's a magical little community of families invested in there children. Because of timing this was his first year in school. I have seen impressive leaps in his understanding of letters, words, art, math and social skills, and all he ever does is "play with his friends". A fun environment with a skilled program, it was a perfect place for his first year!
We tried other preschools for our son and nothing worked until we found Fort Hunt Preschool. He loves going to preschool now! The teachers and staff are amazing and truly care about the kids. Our son learns and also has fun! Our kiddo has a severe allergy and Fort Hunt Preschool has bent over backwards to make sure he is in a safe environment, which gives us such great comfort each day.
Our family has been so thankful for FHP as a first school for our three year old. She LOVES her school and is so excited when it’s time to go- that tells us everything we need to know about the great things the teachers are doing with them every day. We’re thankful to have found this community.
This is a wonderful community with a lot of parent involvement. My 3 year old is always very happy everyday after school and is eager to talk about his day.
My two children have attended this school for the past three years. We could not ask for better, more caring teachers. They are amazing! The natural playground is spacious with a shaded sandbox, a play structure, an area to dig for worms, a music area, and a wooden boat. Parking is easy which is a real plus in this area. We've had a very good experience at this preschool, and we will miss it when my youngest finishes the 4s class.
The 2s class at this school was my child's first school/care experience outside of our home, and I couldn't imagine a better place for her to go. The teacher made her feel comfortable and excited, which eased my own anxieties. As the year went by, she learned so much and was encouraged to be herself. You can tell that the staff here truly care for your child. It's a perfect environment for their first school experiences.
What a wonderful preschool! I could not wish for more. This play-based school values nature, creativity, and individuality. The co-op model allows me to participate in my child's education which is invaluable for both of us. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable and kind in their guidance. My child looks forward to school every day it is in session and has made valued friends. I am very grateful for FHP!
Fund Raising Hunt preschool, be prepared to dedicate all your time and money with the upcoming weekly more money asking. When our child was there , 4 families left the next year because we all couldn't stand it.
Fantastic teachers and a beautiful place for children to learn.
